paint chips

Got a nice little paint chip on my hood...drives me crazy how i see it all the time. been searching the site, seems like many people have discussed Dr. Colorchip with ok results. I was looking at a product on Bimmian. I have a tiag car so i dont expect perfect results. any tips out there?

Got a stone chip on my TiAg hood as well within the first week of picking up the car! I know what you mean, drove me mad.

I just bought the paint pens from BMW so as to get the colour as close as possible.

I was in a bit of a rush so did not do a very good job. In hindsight I would have done the following.

Prep car - clean area, remove any sealant or wax if necessary with citrus wash and then clay bar area and wipe down dry.
Next apply paint - thoroughly shake pen. The mistake I made here was to use the brush supplied in the cap. What i've been told to do is to use a toothpick. This way you can apply minute amounts of paint little by little - take your time. You may need to let dry and redo several ''layers'' to get it flush.
Then apply clear coat once happy and all dry.

Leave at least 24hrs for drying and bonding before washing and reapplying sealant/wax.

Wont be perfect but hopefully will be less of an eyesore.

I just used Dr. Colorchip and was VERY VERY pleased with the result and how easy it was. TiAg not the easiest to hide chips, but dr. colorchip did well

Paint chip repair

[Here’s a fix for the chips. Take isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip and dab in only in the rock chip or scratch a few times. Take a clean towel and dry the paint chip. Take a match out of a matchbook. Use the opposite end of the head. Dab this in touch-up paint. (Do not thin out touch-up paint)

Very carefully dab a very, very minute amount in the chip. Do not get any paint anywhere other than the chip depression. The trick here is not to try to fix the chip in one application. Do this every day until the paint in the chip is even with the rest of the paint surface.

If you do this correctly, you will hardly notice that chip repair and the colour will match] Sal Zaino

I tried to fill a paint chip (on jet black) usign the BMW touch up paint. I used a toothpick to apply the paint. I tried doing it little by little...just put a small "dot" of paint in, and then added a few more until it had filled it in. The chip was not in an obvious spot so I thought I would try it out. It has filled it in but it is not nice and smooth. If you get cloe to it, the touch up is obvious. I tried it once and wasn't happy. I cleaned off all the paint and tried again and got only slightly better results. If you are filling in a chip somewhere obvious I think getting Dr.colourship is probably money well spent.

I used extremely thin layers of the BMW touch up paint with a pin or super fine brush from an art store. Typically gave it 2 hours for each layer I added.

Gave it 24 hours to cure, then topped it with the clearcoat paint with the same method above.

Another 24 hour cure and making sure the surrounding area was clean, wetsand it carefully and lightly with some 3M automotive sandpaper, then polished it in levels with Menzerna SIP and Nano with a Flex Tool, finished.

I havn't had any major paint chips on my 1er yet (knock on wood) but on my other bimmer I have used touch-up paint applicators by Griots garage. They work very well.
