2019 UK Competition M4 Exhaust Sound Differences...

First post on here, be kind...

I know this is old news, but I've only just picked up my car second hand so still getting to grips with it. I'm really not happy with the sound of the exhaust on my 2019 UK M4 Comp. It burbles a bit when letting off the gas at around 3k RPM, but other than that, not that exciting.

I had kind of come to terms with it, until meeting up with a pal a few days ago. He also has a 2019 UK M4 Comp, with the same exhaust, but his is noticebly louder at idle, and burbles at all RPMs, even low RPMs. He insists it's stock as he bought it as ex-dealer from BMW, but i dont see how ours could sound so different.

At Idle mine is almost inaudible... even in Sports+. Wonder if anyone has any suggestions as to why our two cars might sound so different, bearing in mind both are stock, same year etc. For reference, valves are opening fine. I would say his is about 80% louder in idle after cold start.

I will be taking the car for a service next month, so may have an opportunity to ask the garage to change / mod Software if that is going to make a difference.

Thanks

What are the production dates of both of the cars?

His could be registered as a 19/69 plate but built before July/Sept 2018 which is when they switched to OPF.

That’s a good point I hadn’t considered that. I’ll find out!

I was initially very disappointed with my 20 plate m4. After owning earlier cars which were pretty loud this was a big shock. However now it’s got a few more miles on it (6k) it’s sort of got to an acceptable point.

The biggest difference is that you don’t get that lift off sound accelerating hard and backing off around 3k used to give you a cool sound. That’s all gone.

My burbles are pretty weak from inside the car but i don’t mind that. However from outside it’s still pretty damn loud for a stock car.

I didnt like the pulse tones you get from the straight six even though i have the competition package and wanted a deeper note so opted for the non resonated Active Autowerke Equal Length Mid Pipe. That was coupled with a VSRF Induction kit and charge pipes and together the sound improvement is amazing.

I also went for the BM3 multi map install so i can control the burbles and set the levels i want across the 4 switchable maps.

Was this on an OPF car? Issue is I don’t want to map, so my options are limited to OPF back. Makes me think it’s not worth the outlay.
