Using M sport steering wheel from other models

Is it possiable to install other model m sport steering installed into your f15 x5. I was looking at some f30 m sport steering wheel that’s for sale locally and was curious to see if it can be retrofitted.

Judging from ebay and some forums threads we can use interchangeably 1, 2, 3, 4 series and x3, x4 as well. 5, 7 series have different mounting spec. Not sure about x1, x2, 6 and 8 series.

1,2,3,4 series steering wheel will fit. But it is a tad smaller in overall diameter.
If you are fine with it, then it is a direct fit.

F15 has the same wheel used in the F30/F80 (Boots may or may not be the same).

If you had a F10 "LCI" update, the wheel looks the same, but has a different hub(flat). Our F15 hub is concave.

Any of the interchangeable ones have a flat bottom? That would be killer

I thought I would update this, I got done with the steering retrofit, as for the airbag, it appears that all M sport steering wheel airbags are interchangeable with each model.

I was able to find one for $350 a dealer take off airbag from a 2018 BMW M2. No airbag light, no hidden error codes from ISTA/D, and it fits perfectly.

Damn that looks good! So much better than the stock wheel.

Do you know the exact part numbers I would need in order to upgrade from my current wheel (seen below) to this thicker one you have there (or a similar one)?

I didn't do part number matching there's so many variants ie lane change warning, pedal shifter, heated steering, Active cruise control

What i did is to make sure it was removed from a F15 X5 or F16 X6, because the 2 and 3 series are smaller diameter and matching with options that I have ie Lane change warning (vibration motor), no heated steering, no dynamic cruise control no pedal shifter.

The pedal shifter came with the steering so i just left it there its not functional (additional wiring and coding is needed for that for Xline in order to work)

It took me 7-8 months of Ebay stalking to find one that matches my spec and that is locally sold here stateside. Try not to get from ebay in Latvia, Romania, Ukraine they sell smaller F30 steering wheel claiming to fit in F15 (which it does fit but it looks weird).

As for the airbag US model are dual stage or 2 plugs in the back of the airbag otherwise the single stage airbag or "euro airbag" will throw airbag errors.

what's the difference in diameter between X5 F15 and F30 steering wheel?

As for me, I am thinking of buying X5 F15 wheel to install it on F30 since the F30 wheels are so expensive now while I found an X5 F15 wheel that is cheap.

I am upgrading from a sportline wheel which is ugly

One thing to be VERY careful of when buying a used wheel. Ask the seller to state that the wheel did NOT have an airbag deployment. The airbag backing plate will be bent (and even by a MM or so) and your airbag will NOT fit correctly and will be next to impossible to remove (ask me how I know)

And BMW does not sell the backing plate separately so you will have to find a new (used) one on eBay.
