differences:

better gas mileage, better handling, more looks
less room, less seats, less comfort

z4 is meant more for tearing up the road vs the e46 being more practical

I had an E46, and then traded it for a Z4. I now have an E92 on order.

I love my Z4. It is a dream for the true driving enthusiast. I don't regret buying that car. Everyone should have a car like that at least once in thier lifetime.

However, I am excited to get back into the 3 series again. I love the 3 series because it has that perfect balance bewteen sport and comfort. The Z4 is all about the drive. comfort and practicality are much less important in that car. Passengers hate the car because of the harsh ride, tire and wind noise (with the softtop up) and lack of room - especially for tall people. Of course, if you're the one who's always driving, then who really cares about all that stuff right? You'll be having so much fun behind the wheel, that none of that other stuff really matters.

I'd say go for it, but get a short lease so you can get back into a 3 series when you grow tired of the Z4. I'm not sure what kind of lease deals you have in your area, but where I live in California, BMW offers great lease specials on Z4 cars.

You might need winter tires if you drive in the snow. My car has the sport package with summer tires. I tried to drive in snowy conditions once, and it was awful. Virtually no traction at all.
