Does it matter when one buys the extended warranty? For example, if I have 18 months left on my original warranty, will it make any difference in price if I buy it today vs 17 months from now?

The price may go up a little over the years, but dealers can also discount it as much as they want. A few months is likely to not make much difference.

Remember, you are only buying the warranty months that extend beyond the factory warranty. Unless the factory warranty has expired, there are no claims against the extended warranty. For example, if you buy a 5 year warranty it really only covers the one year that goes beyond the factory 4 year warranty.
