High mileage cars, any issues?
Whoever has high mileage like 40-50k+, what issues did you guys get? I’m at 34k and just took mine to the dealer and they replaced front air struts which cost $4500. Trying to see if I should buy an extended warranty just in case.

I have 59k on my 2020 m8 comp coupe. No issues at all so far other than the coolant tank replacement which was a warranty/recall and I had to put a new grill in as the paint on the original peeled/faded.

I have a 2020 M850i 59000km (36660mi), I bought extended warranty for it.
So far just had to replace coolant tank cap under warranty. But I've heard coolant tank leaks and seems like front/rear differential goes back on these |

I have 47k miles on my m850i and have had numerous issues in the interior that were replaced while under factory warranty like speakers with no sound and arm rest heaters replaced. The engine itself seems to be reliable for the most part except for the leaking cracking expansion tank that they replace along with the coolant expansion hose all out of warranty. Then within the last month, my front diff went out and was over 6k to replace. After all the money spent this year, I bought a fidelity platinum warranty. I love my car so much though despite these issues. Just watch out for the differential as these seem to be going out for any newer v8 bmws from the x5 to the m550i and our cars.

Generally the diff can manifest a fluid leak prior to more serious signs of problems.
If the diff failure would be the result of loss of fluid/low fluid this fluid leak is an early warning sign that if spotted in time and addressed could save the diff. (One of my other German sports car was in for service and the tech spotted leaky front diff axle flange seals. He replaced these and the front diff was fine for the next 100K+ miles I put on the car.) But the leak can be the result of the diff already having a serious problem. A bad bearing with the excessive bearing play resulting in a seal leak. Chances are in this case a tech would recognize the leak was caused by a bearing problem and would not throw a seal at a bearing problem. But a diff going bad doesn't have to telegraph its condition via a leak. A noisy diff albeit still a fluid tight diff -- at least for a while -- is another possible scenario. Even noise may not be from a bad diff. Two times with 2 different cars I heard what I really believed (or feared...) was a bad diff. In the first case, a Porsche 996 Turbo, the problem proved to be slightly out of alignment front wheels. In the 2nd case, a Dodge Hellcat, the noise from the back of the car was quite noticeable. And disturbing. But a (fortuitous?) punctured rear tire which required replacing both rear tires -- to avoid too large a difference in rear tire diameters -- afterwards had the noise gone. I thought I had experienced tire noise with my years of Porsche ownership but the noise my Hellcat's rear tires made -- with about 14K miles and still believe it or not plenty of tread left and no signs of an alignment issues -- made me aware of just how noisy (or noisier) tires could be. |

Yeah it started out as a subtle whine and over a few weeks got louder but not super loud either. I am not super well versed in the mechanics of cars but the mechanic who worked on my car actually showed me the failed diff itself. It was kinda cool seeing it in action and know what actually went wrong with it. I have been extra paranoid now with sounds in and around the car everytime I drive it now lol.

I have now 60k+ miles on the car. I had quite a bit of repairs in 2024 netting somewhat 20 to 30k euros on my tuned M850i aside from normal things like new break discs/pads, tires and oil changes and the mighty coolant leaking I had the following repairs:
- RodBearings needed to be replaced - Spark Plugs + Coils - Replacement of all petrol injection nozzles - New hardy discs front and rear + middle bearing - New front and rear axle wheel bearings - Replacement of 2x Valvetronic - Door rubber replacement And I upgraded the oil pan to an aluminum version (when the rod bearings needed replacement). Next time on service the front right steering rod will be replaced. For the rest the beast runs top notch and I mainly ride tours in Europe under high load / mountains with that car.

75,000 km on an 850 with zero problems except the coolant tank leak.
55,000 km on an M8 with zero problems as well. Both cars were stock minus custom exhausts, lowering springs and aftermarket drop ins. |

I mainly drive the car for events/tours under let’s call it more intense load than in regular/daily usage 😉. So those repairs were not big surprises and a few things were preventive. The valvetronic replacement was the only unexpected issue. And that said I’m perfectly happy how smooth and well the car performs with the mileage and under long term high load with the tune of 700+, lowering and all mods on it.
