Crystal Shift Knob

Considering replacing stock shifter with OEM crystal version. Has anyone else done this? I found a thread where one person wanted to replace their existing crystal shift knob with another version, but none going the other way. Pricey proposition (especially compared to original build cost), but are there other issues? Thanks in advance.

No idea on the difficulty but are you aware that the full Crafted Clarity package includes a different iDrive controller and volume button?

For those that have the crystals - are they a fingerprint magnet? I'm getting them on my upcoming X5 as part of a larger package. I think I'd have passed if given the option. Thankfully the shifter is small now.

Also, for some reason and I'm not sure why this episode has stuck with me after 40 years or however long its been, but it always reminds me of the episode with the crystal doorknob from The Jefferson's. I can't think of that shifter without thinking about that doorknob.

Finger print magnet = no.

Yes, but I believe I’m getting just the knob—expensive enough as it is. If I end up getting the whole package for this price, so much the better. Thanks.

Have it on my X5 and don’t notice any fingerprints.

As posted none of the crystal options for at least the M850i are fingerprint magnets. 4 years of ownership and the Adams Double Soft on the back seat just dusts the console and iD7 screen.

On the other hand get the piano black trim and we're talking a world of pain. 😜

My worst annoyance on the piano black is that it always looks like there is a bunch of dust on it.

The volume button is not included in the current option since a few years ago. I thought I was ripped when it was not present, but that is now the build. It does have the knob, the idrive controller and the start/stop for the engine, but no volume knob. One less part to mount!

You're not missing much as the volume knob I wouldn't even call crystal. Rather it's some "nubbies" around the edge vs what you get with the shifter or iD wheel.

So shifter installed, but service tech has no clue about coding to light up the “8”. I sent him some older posts relating to the X5, talking about what coding is necessary. I’m not sure these will be relevant. Anyone with experience installing the shifter in an m850i? TIA.

No clue but dig the glowing 8 after shutting down the car. It was one of the surprises after the wife talked me into the crystal shifter as she loves "bling".

I forgot the stop/start button.

That alone knocks 0.13 second off the 0-60 time.
