Discolouration on Bodywork
Hi all,
This morning I noticed something that looked like baked tar on my bonnet. I managed to remove it but underneath it’s discoloured the paint. Any ideas if this could be polished out/covered? Thanks. |

Looks like water spots
A good polish with a DA and something like Megs Ultimate Compound or Koch Chemis P6.01 will soon have it sorted

Thanks for the replies.
I’ve never polished my car so do you recommended a DA polishing machine? As the prices vary. Also when you polish would I need to do the whole bonnet so the panel is consistent? I guise what I’m saying is, if the spot is polished will it show up or is the polishing action so mild that you could not tell a spot has been polished? |

I doubt that is the paint that's discoloured, more likely something on top of the clear coat. Have you tried polishing by hand, with polish and an applicaror pad. It might be enough, especially if you have never used a DA polisher. I do my whole car by hand. I also use Koch Chemie FSE for water marks which is worth a try too.
I am using Turtle Wax Ceramic Acrylic Black Wax for black cars, but Autoglym Super Resin Polish is also good. If you do polish it out, do the whole bonnet and remember to seal it with a wax or some sort of sealant. I an using Turtle Wax Ceramic Acrylic Black Wax spray which is very easy to apply. My pals a pro detailer; has £thousands worth of DAs (lots of Rupes stuff etc); but he uses one of these for quick blasts for maintenance jobs etc and I bought one and it's been faultless: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Polishers-T.../dp/B07SQQ4JWQ Not used it on my F31 yet as it does need to visit the body shop to get the front end refreshed (peppered with stone chips etc) and the rear bumper needs respraying too But it brought my previous Azurite Black F01 730D up a treat That was using Koch Chemie polish also

DAs are dangerous as you can easily end up doing the whole car, whilst you're there and all that
For those spots, personally I would just hand job it with some polish and micro fibre cloth and see if it goes. If you can catch a finger nail in lacquer spots like that, it's done. Be very vigilant with bird crap as that did actually destroy the lacquer on an old car because I didn't wipe it off in time. Another thing with polishing is the up facing panels (roof, bonnet and boot lid) have the thinnest clear coat layer, so personally I would cut a layer off every 2 years at the most, and using the finest grade polish available. Don't ask how I know about over doing it and cutting all the lacquer off from over detailing |
