I bought a base model Tacoma p/up myself. Its cheap 2 run and it comes w/a 2.7L VVTi 4-banger, A/C, and ABS standard. Its a quick little truck and is huge inside.
Its the best bang for the buck i could find, and comes w/ 5/60 powertrain coverage.

If you want a fun daily driver and don't need a big car on a regular basis, I recommend a very basic MINI Cooper. It gets great gas mileage(about 40mpg highway), handles well, and is a blast to drive - even in city traffic.

Current gen Civics are rattle traps (trust me, I own an Si). For DD duties, I'd consider a Mazda3 four door. Invisible to cops, good gas mileage, fun to drive. The Mini is just too expensive if all you want is something to drive to work and back.

If you're considering the xD, also look at the Nissan Versa. They are unbelievably roomy and feel very upscale for the price.

A coworker of mine owns a Versa. He's very disappointed with the mileage, which is well under sticker. He has the CVT. Otherwise, he loves the room.

I forgot the Fit. The Honda Fit is incredibly roomy, fun to drive, and gets great mileage. That's a great choice, too.

A friend of mine owns an Si and I don't notice any odd rattles. Luck of the draw, I suppose. Historically, Civics have been good driving cars that are fantastically reliable. They're getting larger and larger, though, which is annoying.

Mazda 3 is nice, too.

So is Mini.

Some good choices here.

Indeed. The guy who assembled the passenger's side interior panels of my Si must have been on a serious bender the night before, because there are at least four distinct rattles and creaks. Of course this is the type of problem the dealer can never diagnose or fix, so I just get to live with it. There have been other quality niggles with the Honda, too. It's the third Honda I've owned, and it may be the last.

We've had Mazdas in the family for a long time and have never had these sort of problems. Nissans too.

I'm a big fan of base model vw for basic transportation like a 2.5 rabbit or jetta and there leases tend to be really cheep for a good car

2.5 Rabbit is especially nice now that it has the 170hp version of the five'r. Not as economical as a Honda, though the interior is nicer.

I agree that the xD is an attractive daily driver. It has the Corolla engine, which is durable, torquey, and efficient. I can't see how you could go wrong with one.

I really hope Toyota's "committee for interesting cars" goes through with the development of a new Trueno. A sub 15k, 2600lb, RWD car would be a lot of fun as a DD.

Darnit! I guess I should have specced Horsepower

The new Trueno is supposed to be ~2200 lbs and 120hp. That would be a riot. My '86 MR2 was very close, and it was one of my favorite cars ever.
