Common Issues with m850i? M8 Comp?

Hi all,

new to the community here. I currently drive an early 2022 3 series that I got after school (~50k msrp, 20k miles currently). I'm considering getting a m850i coupe given I got no kids (and don't plan on it for around a decade). I've also seen a CPO M8 comp near me at around 85k while it seems like m850is around 10-20k miles float around 70k.

I'm considering pulling the trigger closer to bonus season (end of year) but wanted to do some research first. Are there any common issues with the m850i or m8 comp that have been discovered yet?

I understand the N63 has been improved from looking around on the internet. However, it seems like there might be "overheating" issues? Forgive my ignorance on this stuff and thanks in advance

I just learned yesterday from a thread around here that some V8s use a 221F thermostat, so no wonder why they overheat. Ha ha. I think it might be just the Ms, but worth looking into that. I had trouble with my ex-Audi S6, also with a V8 with turbos in the V, plus don't want AWD (nor RAS), so will go with a much lighter 840 RWD with no RAS (but with all other options). Good luck.

There are no overheating issues on the newer V8's.

Although I have a lowly N63 in my 2020 M850 there is not question in regards to overheating issues of the past.

Tenac lives in my kneck of the woods aka greater Phoenix area and in nearly 4 years now 115 (Fahrenheit vs our Celsius brethren) is child's play for the M850i.

Ask the guy who lane blocked me on trying to pass a slow moving RV in the right lane on the way to Prescott last week how that worked out for him. Granted it was only 102 F at the time but oil temps were in the mid mark so when we hit the next up hill straight he was a dot in the rearview mirror.

He was doing 100 mph in a pickup truck (not the smartest move given high center of gravity along with limited traction for the RWD with an empty payload in the back). I actually asked the wife if she was getting scared due to the speed. Her reply "if you're having fun I trust you". Well I trust my V1G2 plus JBV1 will all Waze alerts, etc. so didn't even hit the govenored speed limit on the M850i but last glance at the HUD was 143 and the guy was a dot in the rearview mirror. Can't speak for the S63 but the N63 is pure gold.

For anyone worried about heat let these pictures of today in AZ show you how well the cooling system really is.

As you can see from tire temp this is after driving for about 30 to 40 mins or so around from Goodyear to Scottsdale to get sum 100 octane fuel. Car been sitting for 6 weeks its a bit dusty inside...

Thanks for the insight haha. I’m looking at a few that are returning from leases. Is there anything specific I should look for? There is one with around 5 services with just replacing tires looks like within a year.

I was also offered a new 2023 M850i at around 94k (all taxes and fees included). However it’s is pretty bare bones. No Bowers/Wilkins and plain black seats.

Honestly if they are marked CPO you have nothing to worry about. If the budget fits the wants go for it you won't be disappointed.

Looks great! Can that oil temp gauge be set to display all the time?

I mean you do not have to search and set each time when using the car, just set once and I can see the oil temp appear there from then on?

I am in Louisiana, so I worry about temp as well, and want to see oil temp all the time to decide when I can push hard on gas.

Thanks.

It is always there yes by default. The one you have to add will be the water temp.

Disagree, even CPO cars should be checked over very carefully.....dealers frequently rush through these checklists and miss stuff (I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt versus them just being dishonest)....ask how I know.

Agreed on a M8. For the M850i default is water temperature. To see the oil temperature you need to go into sport display mode (have it as memory #7) thanks to the education on this forum. 👍

I am not surprised at all! I test drove a 2018 LC500 last June (that’s the only one locally) to decide between a pre-order 2023 Audi or Lexus. I tested twice and it is a CPO…. But the overall experience is not pleasant and I found damaged sections that was not disclosed…. Very dishonest and disappointing.

CPO means nothing

Anyone know how much off MSRP you can’t get for m850is these days? I’ve been offered a 2023 model around ~5% without haggling and not including rebates. However no B&W sound and pretty basic (no options essentially) black interior.

I think that’s about what you will get….still isn’t that attractive given interest rates.
