Tire question M550
Just curious if everyone's rear tires have to be replaced more often than the rest on the M550. Just had to get mine replaced earlier than expected now saying that it was a used vehicle so I'm sure the tires were not at 100% when I got them. Fronts seem really good just rears were gone which I'm expecting is due to the rear wheel bias but was just looking for some confirmation as on all the AWD vehicles I have owned they wore out evenly, but I could also rotate them and on the M550 you cant as they are different on the rears and are directional tires.

All my tires were at 6-7mm after 17k miles from new. I was pretty happy with that. I don't beat on it though. Maybe the prior owner launched it a bit.

I heard somewhere that the rears wear out faster on the M550i. I bought mine pre-owned and the dealership put brand new rears on it before selling it to me but the fronts seem to be from before and are in good shape, which tells me the rears wore out faster than the fronts.

Might have something to do with it.

My CPO 2018 M550 came with new Primacy 3 tires on the rear, but still had the originals on the front at about 30K miles. Over the course of maybe 18 months, the rears were worn out again. The fronts still had a bit of tread but were starting to develop cracks.
I do NOT hammer the vehicle at all but I do enjoy eagerly accelerating on entrance ramps from time to time. Hope this helps! |

I do. What's the mechanism causing tire wear via DHP?

I have no idea. I've only race launched my car one time, which was epic, but I really dont beat on it. I was just suggesting rear tire wear versus front might have something to do with our cars with DHP having rear wheel steering.
Just my best guess at best. On another note, if Michelin releases the PS5S tire this summer (as predicted), I will put those on my car because the PS5 tire is getting rave reviews, even beating the PS4S tire in performance and wear.

I bought my m550 new and received it in 3/2021 with the sport 19” setup. I don’t have the DSP package. Only a couple of launches at the track when I first bought it, and some spirited highway driving, but daily is city mostly and I don’t turn off DTC.
Exactly 2 years and 20000 miles later the tires were at 3mm and the front sidewalls were starting to show some bad wear which surprised me (pictured). My previous oil change (15000 miles) it was at 4mm without signs of wear. Replaced all four with PS4s ZP this month. Exactly 100 miles later (last week) I got a flat in the rear. When I replaced it, picture showed the inner sidewall was cracked. Not sure what damaged it, but there is a lot of construction in my area. Had to wait a few days for the replacement. I noticed that that the dealer always inflated the tires about 3psi less than what the computer recommends with all my visits. Maybe the tires don’t like the higher psi? Anyway to answer your question the fronts wore out faster than the rears but only showed in the last month before replacing. All were about 4mm at 15000 miles. |

I have a 2021 M550 with Goodyear F1 summers. Original tires. About 16K miles on them now (I alternate with winters when I was living in NJ). I was actually looking at them the other day - I didn't measure them, but they are probably down to between 5/32, so not sure I'll make it to 20K. They are worn pretty evenly all around. These are my first Goodyears, I had always had Michelin previously and was getting at least 20K.
Same for my 2014 and 2018 M550's - they wore pretty evenly back to front. And I never rotated, since the size are different front and back. I was somewhat skeptical with this car, since for some strange reason, the 2021 M550 is spec'd for 38psi front and 35psi rear. My previous M550's were the opposite, and any other BMW I've seen has always had the front with lower psi. At first I thought it was a mistake, but its been confirmed by several BMW sources that it is correct. I any case, I haven't noticed any difference in handling or tire wear. |

Rear tires on my 2018 were replaced as part of the CPO process after 30k miles.
