The G42 costs more than both, but it's in another segment of luxury (and performance).

I view the R's as more rich HS kid dream cars rather than what an adult over 30 would consider. The Golf R does look more grown up these days (especially compared to the ricer boi Type R), but it's still leagues away from the BMW.

Very honest review I came from a type R and from a dig it’s not the best but put it on a track or a decent fast twisty road and I doubt the golf or the 240 could keep up. People bash the civic because off it’s looks but as a drivers car it takes some beating for the money. It depends what you want I enjoyed mine for 2 years but I love my 240 as well.
