2015 F31 - 'software update'

Hey all, just been reading about the new map updates on another thread and have started that process so firstly thanks for that.

But that got me thinking....

I'm a new owner of a 2015 F31 and following some reading on the Connected Drive and it now being discontinued per se, just wondering if there is a way of checking I'm running the most up to date software in the unit.

Maps is obviously in progress but the internal Software Update feature is basically not functioning i assume in part to the discontinue features of the store and the current "remote software" I found from BMW.com is for later models.

Just wanting to make sure I'm not missing a trick.

Note I have added my vehicle to the MYBMW App so would it be fair to say if there was an update avails that would let me know

Cheers in advance legends.

Update here for anyone wanting to update older operating software (maybe newer too) that can't do it remotely

Use this link and enter your VIN.
https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html

This will give you the correct update file.

Download to a USB (pretty sure this needs to be windows formatted FAT32)

Take this and plug into the car's USB in the armrest. Start the vehicle and navigate to Menu>settings>software update.

Follow the onscreen prompts leaving the engine running.

On completion fully turn off, restart and off you jet!

This is not new. This is how it's been done for years.

Yeah man I'm sure it is but as a new-old owner I couldn't find or figure out how to do it. The USB part was pretty obvious but finding the software was for me at least, a little more tricky.

The internal system in the car basically kept telling me it was unable to update remotely as connected drive had been replaced with 'My BMW App' but you can't remote update a 2015 vehicle. Something I now realise.

Just figured I'd plonk the link in here for quick reference and to save new-oldies a little time and some frustration when searching for the software link.

Sorry bro been moving house so been flat out.

I've done a little research on this and there are a few options form what I can gleen. Firstly I don't believe I've read (though wasn't looking) about ID4 to ID5 so to be clear the below is for ID4 to ID6.

Option 1.
Whole head unit swap and new touch screen which is expensive IMO. Bimmertech seem to be one of the most reputable but you pay for it. Probably not a bad direction if monies not a drama and closest to getting original BMW and decent ongoing support.

Option 2.
Add MMI unit - more affordable and again the Bimmertech route seems to be a good one overall although more $$$. I don't think you'd have touch screen per se but you'd have all the other functionality of the CarPlay upgrade from what I can tell.

Option 3.
As above but after Market Chinese or similar. There are a huge number of options here and no doubt some will be crappier than others. Andream seem to be the company of choice from what I can read.
Cheaper by a long way and there have been a number of documented successful conversions in the forums. That said the lack of guaranteed support and ad-hoc communication for me make this a touch risky. I'm not super confident on the install and whilst there are a tonne of videos and walkthroughs I'll probably balls it at some point and completely bugger the whole thing.

Option 4.
This is probably what I'll try initially once I get through this move. Both Bimmertech and Bimmercode offer a flash update from ID4-ID6. As far as I can tell the Bimmercode one is the most affordable option at around $299 USD. You do need access to a PC laptop and need to install a Wifi antenna which looks pretty straightforward even for me. I've reached out to Bimmercode direct and kubax86 who I believe owns it has been really helpful. I'm sure he'd welcome any questions you have.

When I get it done I'll post an update but it won't be for a month or so as I just have too much going on right now to start pulling the dash apart hahahaha

There's a tonne of threads about this so do some more reading as there is loads knowledge here that's way more informed than my own short summary and is super helpful.

Good luck with it 🤙🏼

It’s possible to flash ID4 to ID6 if you have an MY2016 car with the NBTevo HU (you can find out in the map version screen).

Hey MJBO just wondering if you've done this flash yourself? Would be interested in hearing how it went if you did fella.

Cheers 🤙🏼

Unfortunately not, I have the previous generation NBT head unit so ID4 is as good as it gets for me. I installed an MMI unit instead, works great for CarPlay, all I need.
