Tyre advice needed

My 530e has 18’’ Goodyear Eagle F1s. They’re not run flats but they are XL. Is there a tyre that would give a better ride? Do I have to stick with XL?

When you say XL, what L.I. rating are you running? How's that compare with the door placard rating for the same size tyre? That will give more detail as to whether you can drop the XL.

Yep will stay XL think it's required for the heavier 530e.

Is an XL tire more uncomfortable? That's not a dimension
I considered when I recently swapped tires.

XL Is rated for extra load so can run at higher pressure.

Pros and cons discussed on this article.

Thanks, i spent a lot of time picking between tires recently and never came across that variable. I suspect it’s because all the tires presented as an option by tirerack were XL.

FWIW I swapped over from 18 inch Eagle Sport RFT to Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 (not RFT). Before that I had 20 inch Goodyear F1 RFT.

I like the new tires so far, but given a choice I would have gone further down the spectrum of comfort, perhaps to a grand touring tire. The Michelins sure do handle great though, and are super sticky (by my standards).

Had my 20 inch MPS4S installed today.

Increased the sidewall to 40 front 35 rear and the results is a super smooth ride and way better grip and stability.

No more fidgety rear at low speed around town.

On a bad note the dealer messed up one wheels balance on the front, on the motorway I'm getting some shake but will have it sorted tomorrow on a trip back to them.

Have a rescu kit in the trunk in case of a flat and have free towing service with my insurance so very happy I made the change.

Finally the car feel right at low speeds.

Also made an interesting discovery the oem MPS3 I took off on the front had foam acoustic liners even though there is no marking on the tyre wall which is strange.

Only other concern is my 15mm spacers may be too big up front as the tyre is slightly out past the arch as the PS4S have a much straighter sidewall on them. Will probably change to 10mm.

Not sure what size you're running but I've watched several of the videos from this youtube channel and they've all been informative. In the one I've linked below he reviews 14 UUHP tires in the 225/40R18 size. Might give you some ideas on other brands:

I haven’t changed from OEM tires yet on the G30. On my last car I loved the Continental Extreme Contact DWS06, but the complexity here is you will have to detail what you’re optimizing for.

I wouldn’t shift from the Extra Load (XL) tires though. The 530e is a heavy car and due to the batteries. You don’t want to put that weight on tires that can’t handle it. Tires are the most important safety feature on your car as they are the only thing making contact with the road.

That sounds like good advice. What about upping the profile a little bit - say from 45 to 50?

I would say change the tyres I always found Goodyear’s gave a firmer ride. Fitting Michelin Pilot Sport 4S sorted that. Also I found that all season tyres seem softer and therefore provide more flex so worth consideration,
