Car and Driver has already had a chance to test drive the all new BMW 8 Series in prototype form and they've got plenty of good things too say about it.

Check out their full review at: https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...e-drive-review

Some of their notables takeaways include:

Quote:
It is set up to be sporty and to deliver better chassis feel than BMWs of late, building on the recently introduced M5’s momentum. After spending a day in camouflaged prototypes on a development drive through Wales, we think BMW is steering back toward the correct existential apex.
Quote:
Happily, the M850i’s electrically assisted steering delivers actual road feel, informing the driver’s hands of the front tires’ grip and sidewall deflections... Turn-in is quick and satisfying, with a positive feel backed up by stupefying front-end grip.
Quote:
The rear-wheel steering variably nudges the rear wheels up to 2.4 degrees in phase with the fronts for improved high-speed stability or out of phase the same amount to whip the tail around in tighter, slower maneuvers. The system never felt unnatural or unpredictable, and we only detected its invisible hand once, under hard trail-braking into a bumpy turn, when it helped to stabilize the car’s bouncing tail.
Quote:
The M850i’s engine is upgraded relative to the V-8 in the 650i it replaces. It’s a nearly all-new twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 with larger turbos and an estimated 523 horsepower [it's actually 530 HP according to these just revealed 8 Series specs] and 553 lb-ft of torque. The engine pulls hard with immediacy at any rpm (peak torque crashes the party at 1800 rpm and refuses to leave after that) and belts out a fantastic bellow through the exhaust’s electronically managed butterfly flaps, which open more readily in Sport and Sport+ modes.

Very nice! I have a gut feeling that M8 will touch $180k loaded.

How do you figure $150k if the M5 fully loaded is nearly 140k and a fully loaded M760i is 165k? I think 165-175 base. Upwards of $190-200 with individual colors and options.

I'd be shocked if they price a V8 car above a V12 one.

If it approaches $200k they have serious competition at that price point. That's 991 Turbo S territory, and that's a hell of a car.

Exactly! I don't see it being over 175K fully loaded. Otherwise right in turbo S range and most everyone here doesn't seem to think it'll compete with the 911 let alone the amg gt. The new AM vantage is priced at 150K so I think that would be a more likely comp.

Well I guess the M8 is going to be 650HP then, otherwise there won't be enough of a performance gap.

Nah it will reach the $200k fully loaded. It's going to be a stupidly expensive car but I still want one.

It's not even the same type of car why would you even compare these two? The M8 Gran Coupe will go up against the Panamera not the 911.

They brought this car back to pit them alongside the S coupe. Just look at the price of those. There will be a generous price hike, for sure.

Just as they separated the 3 and 4 series to compete with Audi A5.

Creating a new segment rather than using the original is an excuse for them to jack up prices and have the consumer not notice.

If they raise the bar for the standard versions then the Ms... should be a whole other level.

I remember with great nostalgia the days when even the basic BMWs where fun to drive. It is is about time the brand offer the same experience across the range.

What did you expect for the segment it is targeting?

That is how much the things cost today. The good news news is there is plenty of great offerings in lower prices ranges with BMW and other brands.
