I have used all 3 sorta, BMS Stage 1. The most power and most instrusive system is the JB4. The cheapest and easiest to install is the aFe Scorcher and has 1 more lb of boost over the BMS Stage 1. Dinan Stage 1 is the most expensive system that has the least amount of added power.

I am looking to install either the afe or bms stage 1. I know the afe has 1lb more boost but did you feel that it was better or worse than the bms stage 1? At this point I really don't know which is better and for what reason. Thanks for your input.

Who would take the BMS JB4 over the BMS stage 1? I'm about to make this decision right now...don't know if the features of JB4 over Stage 1 are worth the added cost as I don't think they would be useful to me.

The aFe runs just as good as the BMS Stage 1 when using 93 Octane gas. I have read that if you have to used 91 Octane then the BMS is a safer choice. The power is more noticeable with the aFe over the BMS system that you can feel in the torque.
Run the full JB4 if you are into tuning and changes (downpipe, uppipe, higher flow mufflers) as this would give me the most added power. Daily driver usage could suffer if you are running the upper limits of the system. The aFe is so easy to install and remove (two connections) and the box tucks out of the way without all the extra wires (not used) the BMS system has. Adding a new intake or performance muffler adds to the systems power. If you want simple and moderate power gain the aFe/BMS systems are the best for the money. If you want to keep adding and tuning the engine for the most possible power then JB4 is the way to go. The Stage 1 systems are good for the guy/gal who wants a little more power and torque without hurting the cars normal driveability. |

AFE compare to BMS Stage 1
quick install that will add a good amount of power both tunes have good reviews, we sell a lot more JB than AFE but you will be happy with either one. The Jb4 will add more power than the 2 mentioned above, it has more features and is a lot more flexible for future upgrades.

Delnari,
Where did you purchase the afe? I have been looking online for the correct part number to order. I even called afe sales/technical support and they didn't know??? Also I think I read somewhere that an online afe distributor was able to price match with the BMS. If that is true does anyone know where? |

+1 for the aFe. It installs in minutes and gives a very noticeable increase in power. Another advantage of installing in minutes is uninstalling in minutes. If you are concerned with your dealer at all, you simply unplug the 2 TMAP connectors and remove the unit.....easy.

+1 for BMS JB4 "Stage 2" just installed it in 30 mins easy to do. Map 1 you definitely feel the difference and I love the ability to switch maps or switch the tune off using the volume buttons on the steering wheel.

+1 on aFe Scorcher , friend installed it on his 535ix
I have RaceChip on my N20 (X3 28i) was going to get the aFe but went with a group buy for Racechip and saved RC equivalent to BMS Stage1 and aFe scorcher at stock settings, easier to increase settings than BMS (No need for laptop or buying extra usb cable), settings can be increased much safer than BMS Stage2 .. Installation is easy for me (newbie) plugs into MAF, MAP and TMAP (no canbus, ground or any of that tapping into wiring).. Power? well I have increased from C stock setting through D, E, F, 0, 1, 2, 3, and currently at 4 .. Max setting is 7 , and lowest setting is 8 then it goes 9, A, B, C

JB4 vs Stage 1
I get the JB4 is for more additions but is it necessary for things such as exhuast and intake. I would like to add just a bit more power without getting crazy. Looks like AFE has a intake and scorcher combo. Thoughts?

FYI, with an extra inexpensive connecter you can edit the parameters in the software and add an additional lb of boost on the bms stage 1. Then it's equal to aFe. But only advised with 93 octane.

I am considering either the jb or jb4 for my 228i but am not going to mod any further as it is lease. Which is best for my need just to get a little more pick up and go....yet not hard on the car?

Went to afe power site and the scorcher is not listed for 228i only 3 series and up . If you put in 228i they list sprinter which is not the same. Don't all these cars use n20 engine why would they not list 228i?
