Water Restriction Level 5, What to do?
Here in Brisbane, we are going to water restriction level 5 tomorrow: 10 April 2007.
That means no car wash except for windscreen, mirrors and other parts of the car that were deemed safety related. I did my final wash today. Any suggestions on how to keep the car in pristine condition? Other than: - move to other places/states. - install rain water tank (still in the queue) - goto public car wash (which recycled 90% of the water, they stink sometimes) - dry car wash kit (do you trust it?)

go to one of those touchless car washes. $9.50 gets u everything including wax and dry (rocklea). they do a reasonable job (except the back end). otherwise u can go to those self serve places like Carlovers. Last time I was there it was $2 for 3 minutes of high powered recycled water. went around the car about 6-7 times.

Touchless car wash sounds like the answer. Where about at Rocklea?

Hey mate, I love my car that much that I went out and got 2 rain tanks and a pump so i could wash it. At the moment my tanks are full (from justa few days of rain but mind you, more than half my roof guttering is directed to the tanks). My neighbours hate me washing my car in my driveway but hey, if they want a clean car... they have to pay for a tank as well. In my street, there have already been cases of neighbours dobbing on neighbors.... sad really but it is sad how bad our water situation has become, that we cant do the simple things in life like water my little cherry tomato plant with a trigger hose!

I'd go a touchfree wash at a servo or CarLovers... not too keen on the 'waterless wash' just the idea of wiping off dust and crap off the duco with a cloth...its bound to scratch the duco in my mind.....
I used to go to a car wash bay near my home, but i absolutely hate the stares and honks I get when others queueing get impatient after 5mins of me washing and soaping my car! Why is everyone always in a rush!!!

I have investigated buying a slimline rainwater tank. Not expensive, and I think this will be the solution going forward. Nothing stoping you using grey water to wash your car at home is there ??? i.e water from a completed bath. Bath soap and hair shampoo should be mild enougth and not cause problems. |

The touchless car wash at Rocklea is at the Coles Express Shell, Granard Road. There are also self serve wash bays there.

I have to say, i thought with the little rain we've had, it would take forever for my 2000litre tank to fill up. But i redirected just over half my roof gutters to the tank and one solid weekend of say 4 hours each of rain and my tanks were 3/4 full! Dont be suprised at how much water you get coming off your roof!! Guess itll be more for a single storey house spread out than a smaller area of a 2 storey house (roof area im mean). Now my tanks are always full, i can wash my car, water the lawns etc for a whole month and only use 300-600litres and itll get filled up quickly with a short downfall. I love it!

I read in the herald sun NOT to use grey water from washing machine as it is full of toxins...unless pretreated before use of course on the lawns etc (and within 24hrs). I'll be a little hesitatant to be using it on a car....

I've got the dry car wash kits, but they say to wash off excess dirt first! Which sorta defeats the point, i think they're pretty much only to be used in the week or so after you've had the car washed to clean very minor amounts of dirt off.

asif waterless wash wouldn't hurt your car... you are scraping off dirt... even micro particles in everyday driving can scratch it!

exactly my thinking! hence why i'd only use it to spot clean when the car is near-clean.

For now, while I wait for a water tank, I'm just going to go to car lovers and blast away the dirt / dust and give it a quick once over with the sponge. This should cost the whole of $3 to do. When I get it home, i'll go over it with merguires quick detailer.

I feel for you guys. I am still annoyed with Sydney's level 3 restrictions where I can't use a hose!
I won't rant on about the government here, but needless to say it seems RIDICULOUS that we all live right next to a massive ocean but cannot make good use of most of that water! |

Teir working on de-salination plants but that takes time. I'm more annoyed that the local and federal governments haven't identified the problem sooner. Seriously, it they were doing their job's, this would have been identified and a solution put in place 5 - 8 years ago at least.
