Depreciation on steroids? LOWBALL offer by BMW on my M850i

So not only is it hard to find an M5 that I want, but I may have to pony up more for it. When I went to BMW I got a shockingly lowball offer for trade in. Mind you, my M850i GC has just under 19,000 miles on it and is in great shape. Everything in the video (car looks gorgeous, doesn't it? I think I should just hang onto this beautiful beast):

58k is about right for a dealer acv in the current environment--- used car values are dropping heavily overall sans a very few choice brands and models.

BMW doesnt fall into that unique segment (8 series for sure) and a values continue to plummet.

Here is the latest auction value average on your car and these are prices pre recon, pre transport, pre fee, pre etc but almost always dealers will ACV trades or buys at even lower numbers.

So my friend, Im not shocked at all and for sure because its an 8 series, things are even worse off. My M8 Coupe is fucked too but I just am going to enjoy it and hold on to it as if its a sunken cost and deal with a sale later down the road.

^ Thanks Vic, I knew you'd come in with some data to back this up.

Yeah, now that I'm in this hole I might as well keep the car too

The only way out is if you can smoke a deal on the M car--- basically robbing peter to pay paul or if you are ok with the low ACV to enjoy a car you like better???

I did see your test drive video and the quick dash shot showed that you didnt have the M5 in the most aggressive setup which really makes a difference in M cars.

Unfortunately used car prices have plummeted but dealers are now discounting and there’s incentives on M8’s if you finance or lease a 24.

I bought my M8 for the long term keeper, I really enjoy it. I know buying new was going to be pain full but some of the dealers around here are still offering me just over 100k for a 2022.. Between you and I the Porsche dealers around seem to value the M8 more than the BMW dealers. lol

The main reason I don’t lease or finance is because I want to mod the M car that I get. I would want to get an exhaust, to be precise

Oh, I’m fully aware. When I test drive cars that don’t belong to me, I tend to drive them conservatively and shyly.

But once they are mine………….buahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!

Dealers have a hard time selling new 8s let alone a used one. This will probably be the first time in a long time that I'll have to finish out my lease lol.

I wonder why the 8 isn't selling very well?

Tupper, you can also try searching up cash offer websites to see what they’re willing to pay (KBB, CarMax, etc.). But your trade in value is around what I paid for my loaded ‘21 GC in December.

These cars were never going to be a good investment. But they are awfully fun to drive and look and sound very nice. If you buy you have to know going in that it is going to depreciate like crazy.
The more money you put into it the more you are going to lose.
The Great M8 here on the Big Island had almost $200k into his 22 M8 coupe. He ended up getting $104k to a dealer in so. cal.

I could go on for days with this... some immediate thoughts but definitely not all the defining factors:

Its technically an overpriced German coupe that fits a small niche. Benz has had similar issues with its CL and then the S coupe plus the GT63 models only to be saved by Covid and that whole part/supply chain issue(s). Audi even struggled with the RS7 valuations.

Bottom line is a mid 100k coupe isnt gonna fly unless its a Porsche these days... over produced and econ 101 rolls in aka supply and demand. People just dont want to fork over that bag when they can bump up a little and get the likes of a 911 or spend less and get a reasonably good match with a G82 or whatever which is much less.

so you said you were expecting high 60s. They offered 58K with room for negotiations meaning 60K was likely going to be their offer.

That's not a huge difference between your expectations and their offer. Sounds like you can try a few other dealers and get mid 60s. Honestly the M8s are barely selling for mid 70s now fully laoded, so M850 for mid 60s makes sense.

They depreciated a lot, first it's a sport car, 2nd they are not that desirable being a coupe or coupe-like by nature and not a family-friendly car.

The right time to sell a car like this is now. It will continue to decline further from now on.

I dumped my 2022 M850i four months ago and I guess I am lucky to get what I did. One dealer offer was literally 50% of original price I paid and the car was only a year old with 14,000kms.

My car was a lemon, couldn't get it fixed and it was also hit twice. I'm just glad it is gone.

If it wasn't a lemon and had not been hit, I would maybe still have it.

Your best bet is to go into a low miles CPO'd M5. They took a big loss on their trade, you will have yours, and it will be a wash.

I went from a 2022 530i (15k miles) into a 2022 840i (11k miles) , lost 20k on my trade, got the 840 for 20k off original MSRP, so it evened out in my eyes. At least , thats how I try to be positive

PS ,I have my sticker for my 840i GC , with every option including B&W 96k, I dont think your original sticker was 120k, closer to 110, Id think

And for folks who are not blinded by the price tag and love for the 8 series will also notice that driving the M4 x-drive is not that different from the 8 series for the average consumer.
Also V8s in general are sluggish and slow revving compared to smaller engines like the straight 6 in BMWs.

Add that you can be just as fast (or a lot faster) with less power for much cheaper, plus a lot cheaper to repair if shit blows on the i-6, makes purchasing the M8 more of a love for it and less of an enthusiast choice.

Garage List
I recently traded my 19' M850 Cabrio with 20k miles in for a GT3RS and they gave me $60k so I feel like your value is about right. The reality is that these cars are pretty common so they won't hold onto their value as well (especially after warranty). That or maybe I'm jaded by the Porsche world where the cars are harder to get and less common. I'm with Vic and Kponti on this one - for the average consumer, these are pretty common cars. Hard to retain value when there isn't a key differentiator to the average consumer.
