I ultimately thought the M8 was supposed to be a 911 turbo competitor but can’t really see people cross shopping the two. The 992 Turbo S is largely a world beater and knowing that the dot 2 version will only be faster and that a GT2RS is coming which will only be faster as well is almost hard to believe. Porsche is not without its problems, from 2008-2013 on the 911 and Panamera.

This thread has been very interesting and insightful listening to members going from 911's to M8's or 850M's. Obviously since this is a BMW forum, that is what I would expect. I haven't been on the Porsche's forum too much lately. If I was, I'm sure I would read posts in the opposite direction. I am looking to possibly trade out of my 2017 911 for an M8 or 850M. I have been fortunate to have owned/leased three different 911's along with a Boxster, Cayman GTS, and Macan Turbo. With the exception of the Macan, the other Pcars had that classic Porsche trait of being very nimble and connected to the road. This is a very special driving sensation, not equalled by most cars. That being said, as I get older and my lower back getting worse, I am looking for a change. I was fortunate enough to test drive an M8 and 850M yesterday and was impressed. It only took a few seconds into the test drive to understand they were not 911's but I didn't expect them to be similar. They felt like the heavier cars they are but are still very capable. They provided a ride I would equate to a smooth touring GT. By the end of the 3-5 mike drive, I did come to the conclusion that I can definitely get used to the ride both the M8 or 850M provide. I think most, if not all 911 owners will agree that the car provides a connection to the road that is hard to replicate. On the other hand, for me it is a ride that after experiencing for an extended period of time, I'm ready to move on. I'm sure there are times I will miss the 911 but that's only natural.

Agree not to be compared. I'm shopping to add an M8 comp to the stable. Got test drives alone in the M8 and liked it except visibility seems compromised. Fast from a stop but seemed to be hampered from a roll as i could feel the transmission protections intervening. It will be used as a daily and to haul surfboards and get dirty and not wash it. Will replace an e92 M3.
The 991 Turbo S doesn't have the cap on performance with the encryption issues on the M8 TCU and with a couple bolt ons my 991 can do nearly 150 in the 1/4 mile and over 180 in the half mile. And it puts the power to the ground 0-60mph low 2's all day. I am literally afraid to bring it to the track - so I bring the 991 GT3 instead. GT3 also not comparable to the M8 comp at all. GT3 is light and with a couple track tweaks (alignment, brakes), it can be ran at a track all day long where the M8 could not handle similar conditions due to the weight. But as a daily, the M8 has both beat. Super comfortable and nice tech. I'm not in a hurry and monitoring the tuning developments as this has a lot of potential once the TCU encryption is broken.

The Porsche marketing magic has a lot of influence but it also over exaggerates and it’s newer demographic just eats it up as the gospel.
30 years of 911 ownership. Club racing, Concourse, etc... Hell yea BMW competes with Porsche in that demographic but for different driving experiences. There is no one correct ideology in a performance car. Porsche does it their way and BMW does it their way with equally conviction. I recently traded in my C4S for a M2C and am loving the neutral rwd monster. It’s all what you are after as speed is a given with all of them. It comes down to what kind of visceral driving experience you prefer. I still own a classic air-cooled 911 as its as pure of the 911 experience you can get. That said, the 911 experience in its truest form is raw, uncomfortable and gets old real quick if you were expecting it to be a luxury car. Last edited by MystroX5; 09-29-2020 at 05:35 PM.. |

M8 on the other hand is an unfortunate pig that could otherwise have benefited from carbon core chassis had it gone RWD and DCT. Leave the AWD ZF8 for pedestrian models.
