Alpina B8 Gran Coupe Spotted Testing on the Nürburgring

There isn't much camouflage on this particular BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. That's because it's the new Alpina B8, or at least, that's what our spy sources tell us. Alpina's exterior changes are always subtle, but the spoked wheels on this test car are a dead giveaway as to its origins.

Another giveaway is the rear fascia, which incorporates quad exhaust outlets in place of the trapezoid exits on the standard 8 Series. Couldn't this be an M8 Gran Coupe, though? Take a close look and you'll see the pipes adopt more of an oval shape compared to the round outlets on the M8. The modest rear diffuser on this test vehicle is also a bit more aggressive with more slats.

Moving to the front, we can see there's a bit more chin to the chin spoiler on this car. We can also see some indentations very low on the left and right sides of the lip, which are commonly seen on Alpina upfits. Put it all together and there's really no doubt we're looking at an Alpina B8. All we need is a proper shade of green on the exterior and those spoke wheels brightened up from their current matte black testing attire.

Mechanical upgrades to the B8 over the standard 8 Series are still a mystery to us. That said, it's likely to follow the Alpina B7's lead with around 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) from its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. That would match nicely with BMW's in-house M8 Gran Coupe, while offering the typical Alpina posh interior upgrades for which the company is known. Suspension tweaks should place the B8 comfortably between the standard 8 Series and the M8.

We don't have a definitive timeframe for when the B8 will officially debut. It could arrive by the end of the year as a 2021 model, or during the first quarter of next year as a 2022 model. When it debuts, it will be Alpina's new flagship sedan and while the U.S. often misses out on such models, this one could make it to the States.

I've never been a fan of the Alpina design treatments (it's not a 'design language' to me since they retrofit a relatively fixed set of aesthetic changes) and this is no different--it looks older somehow. Not a fan.

Couldn't agree more and not sure who Alpina is actually after. Had a M6 which I loved and had a B6 GC for 3 weeks dumped it fast. Just hated how it drove and wallowed into turns LOL

A person who wants the ultimate sleeper car with nicer interior appointments, and one who values rarity.

The company has a motorsport heritage and pedigree that simply cannot be denied. They also have the fastest sedan in the world with the 2020 B7 able to hit 205mph.

You may be shocked by what follows... but I don't agree. It's not a sleeper--it's an 8 series in a retro but, nonetheless, dated suit. Every 8 series--even this one--stands out.

Aside: perhaps your Bimmerpost alias indicates a slight bias. What do you think?

As for the fastest sedan: I've no idea since that metric isn't readily measurable where I live. But, that said--define fast? It seems you mean straight line? OK... so Alpina tweak the already-powerful N63 engine variant, right. So you need to compare it to another tweaked car--level playing fields are important.

Given that, are you saying that you don't think a comparably tweaked M8 or M850i can match or beat it... when they're essentially either the same base ingredients or a more track-focused version of it.

You're more than welcome to your opinion but you've literally zero chance of altering mine.

Having seen the limeypride personal M8 car photo library (it is loaded in at least 234 different threads!), I think the best thing Alpina could do is sack their head designer and hire limeypride as their Primary Research Insights & Creative King.

I see the positive face..
1..soon we will able to code Alpina M8 display with bimmecode
2..Alpina has is own dumpers settings that probably works better with Kw or other after marrket springs and some of you more expert can code on M8.

I have always loved Alpina and dreamt of one for a long time. And I still like them a lot and hear about their excellent comfort and everyday drivability that everyone who has driven one mentions and swears on.
But if I wanted, and could afford the ultimate machine and top performance right now it would undoubtedly be an M8 coupled with a daily driver as the former would be like a piece of jewel to be taken out just on rare and special occasions.

I'll throw out a different theory here.

I love an XB7, B4 Vert, B5 Touring, B6 Gran Coupe, B7, B8 Gran Coupe, but I want an M4 Coupe, M6 Coupe, M8 Coupe, not the Alpina versions.

I view an Alpina as a cruiser more than an M car, hence my views on the models I like from each brand.

How to ruin a great looking car 101, same treatment to B6 GC... M variants look way better and internal quality is not far off (if at all)

For me I'd go with a 2021 M8 GC in Verde Ermes (sounds like the free Individual is still in play) and then consult limeypride on how to mod the car making the B8 look like a complete waste of cash. Granted there are others out there in which having an Alpina variant will put a little extra swagger in their step. However, my swagger falls well below the radar of the car I'm driving and it takes a fellow horologist to even spot it.

It seems the Alpina treatment is going the way of the Betamax video cassette (there's a lot of meaning and nuance in that comment but I stand behind it ).
