What was the out of pocket for this. I think when Ben got me it for M5 it was $600 or thereabouts but I had it installed for free since I was friends with three lead tech.

I had it explained to me by a BMW rep but he was not technical to say the least. So I paraphrased it roughly as follows to which he replied, "yeah, yeah, that's it!" (pinch of salt anyone): the coding is required because each digital component that communicates across the car's bus (computer wiring that interconnects most components within a given category—others are isolated, e.g. head unit vs. ECU) securely registers itself with the vehicle. This one, while able to prove its genuine BMW, isn't part of the car's stock component inventory. The coding adds it.

As a security SW engineer, this is a reasonable approach to me but it could be utter bullshit.

Still managed to have some fun throwing it's weight around the track on Sunday. Out of 15 cars, this porker was the first to need gas after about 4.75 15-20 minute sessions.

I just went and grabbed it (there was only 1 on the ground in 200 miles in this color as an M3 Comp, basic M3 spec but has the necessary items for performance.
