Here's a couple of random shots of the M850i that I've been begrudgingly waiting to show up in the mail. The back story being about a month ago I was late to meet the wife and driving on a familiar neighborhood road in which everybody goes over the PSL by 10MPH easy. Thus, I wasn't paying attention to the V1 given there isn't any traffic enforcement generally in play but to my surprise the next thing I new it was going off and the JBV1 app notified (via Waze API) there was a speed trap. Too late as I could see the flashes from the camera taking place.

It was my first experience with the portable speed cameras my municipality has primarily deployed around school zones. They are about 4 to 5 feet tall and although square roughly the size of a 30-gallon trash can. The ones around the school zones all have graphics of children on a crosswalk with school backpacks on, etc. It is worth noting I pass by one of those at least a few times a month when they have it set up at a school near the house. However, in those cases I'm down to 25 MPH anyway and always 15 MPH or less as I pass through the crosswalks when school is in session regardless of whether one of the camera boxes being deployed or not.

So as the weeks have went by I've thought that between the height of the cameras in the box and the low profile of the 8-series plus my BlendMount for the V1 under the rearview mirror it blocked my face. The key being is legally without a clear picture of the driver a citation cannot be officially filed. Obviously I did get the "notice" today but it was not an official citation given I was not clearly visible whatsoever in the picture capturing the driver but the equivalent of a warning.

The mirror/BlendMount/V1 was not a factor but rather the entire frame capturing the driver has a reddish tint to it making it useless for identification. Perhaps the glare of the sun, just a poor camera in the box originally designed to capture 25 MPH or less, I was in lane 3 aka furthest from the box or that glorious Fiona Red/Black interior.

They clocked you 13 over? 58 in a 45, that's harsh! Most of our mobile cameras only clock 16+ mph over. Usually most of them around 20-25 over and under $200 fine. While technically they can be fought in Virginia courts, it usually costs more to fight than the $150 no points non moving "parking" fine of the speed camera tickets around here.

In any event; listen to Shaggy - say it wasn't you! Even if they catch you on the counter!

(P.S. I can't tell you how many of my former clients said "these aren't my pants" when they are wearing clothes. And honestly it works 75% of the time. )

All of the municipalities in the greater Phoenix area set their permanent and mobile cameras at 11+ over the PSL. In fact the notice even calls out I was at a speed "greater than reason and prudent" and states (0 - 10) as in if I was driving at 55 MPH at the time it would have been reasonable.

Most of my married friends get around all speed cameras by just registering their daily drivers in the others name. Simple and done given even if the picture of the driver is flawless it is not the registered owner so with a little paperwork it all goes away. They will ask if you desire to identify the driver but it's an "ask" vs anyway to legally force you to do so.

You can also register out of state, but that gets more complicated. Especially if you still live and work in State A. But registered in State B will prevent A from imposing most restrictions on you in B.

For example, I usually advised my DUI clients to register in Maryland, so that Virginia can't take away your drivers license. And they can still keep driving.
