Because BMW has never been just about straight line acceleration.

Yea I know, but the cars we are talking about aren't just great In a straight line. Nissan GT-R, Porsche 911 gt2 rs, even the new ZR1 corvette. BMW not capable of giving us a car that can compete with them?

BMW tried creating a track car, M4GTS, and half assed it so it flopped. BMW can develop a car to compete with the 2RS and ZR1 since they have the capabilities, but I'm going to make an educated guess and say the cost of R&D would outweigh any projected profits from that project since they'd have to start from scratch.

BMW has quite openly stated its intention to rival the 911 with its many levels of power and track focus, so I would totally expect M8, M8 Competition, M8 CS and/or M8 CSL, ranging from 600-625ps to 700ps.
I'd love to see the M8 CS/CSL get this type of OLED tail lights which BMW has showcased, just like the M4 GTS/CS did: Last edited by advantage20; 05-07-2019 at 08:27 AM.. |

R8 is on the wrong gear when rolling. A high revving NA should be at 2nd gear, in which case it would talk away from everyone.
It's a shame.

I agree with you though it doesn't directly compete with it and if BMW would create one they probably won't make the profits they want to make that would make it feasible for BMW.

Honestly, there isn't anything you can compare to those two. Especially not from BMW. I love BMW, but I'm not a fanboy and I'll admit when they're outdone.

911 vs GTR etc
That BMW wasn't even broken in yet. It had 226 miles on the odo. The Audi had 19K..the Porsche had 3000..etc.
Might not have mattered overall, but it would have helped a bit.

That Porsche is probably lighter than the 850. Also being rear engine allows for really good hookup. I'm not sure how much awd on that helped the Porsche though. Probably not much.

911 lighter but 850i counters with more power and torque the HP/Tonne ratio is pretty similar so I don't see this as an unfair fight at all. The 850 got a dreadful launch though compared to the others.

while indeed all 3 vehicles have different gearing ratios in their transmissions... .. they all have a 3rd gear... and magazines often test things like 30-50 and 50-70 in a particular gear, very commonly third for passing acceleration tests.. Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 05-08-2019 at 02:38 PM.. |
