Wow, this is one funny post.
The car is a fail because of no sunroof ?? LMAOROF This car is such a fail that after owning numerous 911's, still have the 997 turbo, I ordered this new 8. And what is this talk of a a 'big un sporty coupe'?? The car is about the same size as a Mercedes E coupe. Around 20cm shorter than the S coupe. The 8 is simply a balanced design that will be admired and loved in years to come. It is the DB11 for poor people. Better looking too IMO. Will it sell ? No idea and frankly I don't care at all. Will it plummet in value? Fine. I like it and for the rest who cares. You? Buy something else, problem solved. Sunroof, really?? Only in America I suppose. |

I think you can go both ways on this topic. It’s all what your use to and the climate you live in. Coming from 3 decades of 911 ownership with and without sunroofs. In the northeast it is nice to open the roof in the fall and spring to let the fresh air in. It also allows a lot more natural light giving a coupe less claustrophobic eliminating that dark cave feeling. My current 911 C4S has a dark charcoal Alcantera headliner with a full black leather interior and it gets really dark inside. If I open the sunroof the beauty of the interior and all the aluminum accents come to life. The M850i is a beautifully styled interior so not seeing all its details would be missing out.
I have never felt there is a tangible penalty in weight from a sunroof. I raced several 911’s at club events at the Glen or Pocono with and without sunroofs. The carbon fiber roof is a beautiful look. The M850i I drove had it and it looks magnificent in the sun. The M850i is not a lightweight track car so additional a pano roof wouldn’t make a difference and probably make more sense as a option on a proper GT. The Panamera has the option and so does Ferrari. A pano roof doesn’t make it any less “hardcore” than what the car was designed to do. I had the opportunity to compare the coupe and the convertible next to each other. I love the sexy lines of the coupe but I could see the beauty of the drop top if you lived in the right climate. I am seriously considering a coupe but would get Merino ivory to lighten up the interior. I would order a pano roof if it were a option but it certainly not a dealbreaker either way. The M850i most certainly will NEVER be a old persons car like a SL or Corvette. Its way too sexy. A odd trend of all or nothing can be a dangerous way of evaluating a vehicle. Nobody that has owned a real track car wants a “race car for the road’. They ride like crap and will rattle your teeth out on good public roads. Not everyone wants/needs a production track car. In fact most that purchased these specific vehicles never see a track much like most Range Rovers will never go off roading more than a gravel road. There is hypocrisies on both sides of the performance spectrums. The M850i is a honest GT like the Ferrari Daytona was in its day. Last edited by MystroX5; 04-06-2019 at 10:00 AM.. |

I don't know what it has to do with Americans either. OP's not complaining about cupholders for an unnecessary Coke or Starbucks here.

I was out of town this week and had a rental car. I hated not having a sunroof, ruins the whole driving experience.

M850i SUNROOF VERY DISAPPOINTING DECISION BY BMW
Yes it is all a matter of preference and that is exactly the issue - BMW does not consider this preference in the 850i.
I love the open feeling created by the sunroof. My M3 had a sunroof. I chose my current 650i over an M6 because the 650i has a sunroof. I will not upgrade to the M850i for the very same reason. Interestingly that Porsche/ Mercedes S Class offer a sunroof which is the intended market for the M850i. I am sure 99% of customers appreciate the luxury of these cars as much as the sportiness. Unfortunately, BMW will lose some sales and considerable margin because of this decision in what is a very fickle market. |
