Long Term

I'm thinking of joining the 8 family. Either with an Alpina B8 or an M850i GC. (I'm not a fan of the M8 ride) How has this engine been long (ish) term? Any of the oil consumption problems of earlier versions? Coolant spraying through the overflow tank? How about tire wear? I read that these beasts EAT them. Any feedback is much appreciated!

Coolant overflow reservoir seems to be the big issue with these vehicles.

I only had my B8 for a little under a year but I haven't had any drivetrain issues.

That’s a false statement. M8/M5 shares the same engine and same coolant reservoir… I have changed mine twice already for my M8… even the “upgraded” reservoir with new part number has failed for me… luckily it didn’t cause any issues as I’m checking the coolant reservoir regularly for any visible corrosion

Have you tried the aftermarket one mentioned elsewhere? Anyone had an issue with it?

I have read about this countless times. There is an After market solution for about $1200.00. Why BMW doesn’t just FIX this blows my mind. I wonder if Alpina has the same issue, or did they handle it?

Thanks for this. I have heard that the M8 M850i have problems with the coolant reservoir. I wonder if Alpina has addressed this?

Are you sure this wasn’t just an issue on the 5 series and M5s?

A lot of parts under the hood are beefier or larger than the M850i but I'm not sure about the coolant reservoir specifically.

Maybe someone can cross check the part numbers?

550, 750, and 850 share larger expansion tank. 550, 750, 850, x5/6/7 share the smaller expansion tank.

Both M5 and M8 have the same engine and shares the same coolant reservoir… hence the issue exists for both platforms… as I did mention before I’ve changed the coolant reservoir twice.. mine is MY19 and the reservoir has failed, then changed with new part number reservoir and unfortunately it has failed as well, ive noticed the corrosion around where the two pieces of reservoir joins each other and didn’t want to risk it
