M850 stock sounds better than M550 stock. I’ve read there’s only one resonator but I’m sure it’s a different muffler also.

No doubt that an aftermarket exhaust or just some mods to the factory exhaust will achieve a better sound. That said I'm happy with just the simple mod of pulling the fuse that controls the valves when they are open. Even in comfort it has plenty of grunt aka burbles and gurgles.
But for my daily drive I use Sport Individual with the engine set to Sport Plus (key as richer fuel mixture via the ECU), transmission in Sport (Sport Plus is too aggressive for just daily driving) and the chassis/suspension on Comfort (key for the crappy streets in the area). Pure bliss as cold starts even in comfort (Sport Plus won't make them louder) are glorious. Switch to Sport Individual for the drive and as the saying goes "now we're cooking with gas". |

I really don't know if the M850i sounds different than the M550i. I've test driven the latter. Any reason that they should sound different?

The only reason I’ve ever read about is the M850 has one resonator plus the main muffler while the M550 has two resonators plus the main muffler. I actually removed both resonators and only have the muffler now. For $300 or so, it’s a good exhaust mod for the money and it sounds better. But not as good as if you actually go get a new system from Dinan, Remus, etc.

I’ve owned both, and pulled the exhaust valve fuse on each. Both had decent sound stock—considerably better sans fuse—but the M850 sound is better in each instance. Couldn’t begin to tell you why.

It could also be the way the computer is tuned. If the aftermarket guys can change burbles and pops and cold starts, then BMW can too. I think it’s be design regardless of how or why. The 8 is supposed to be flashy and sporty. The 5 is supposed to have that degree of subtlety.

Under the category of “be careful what you wish for,” I’ve pulled the exhaust valve fuse and, in my sedate, otherwise quiet neighborhood, when I start my car it sounds like the beginning of a NASCAR race. Now I either have to (1) start my car with the garage door closed (not sure my marriage is sufficiently stable to survive that), or (2) replace the fuse and just drive in Sport/Sport+ after start-up. Although the latter is eminently acceptable, I seem to recall that the M850’s may be programmed to start up with both valves open initially. Should that be the case, replacing the fuse will not solve my Talladega mornings dilemma. Any advice (aside from trading for a Prius) would be appreciated.

LOL, you guys really must not have heard a truly loud cold start before.
The cold start with my M850i with Fi Exhaust valve open is definitely increased in volume (as it SHOULD be!), but not really all that noteworthy. Certainly not worthy of being labeled NASCAR
