M850i In Tanzanite Blue Finally Landed but...

My dealer arranged for me to come in today to pick up my M850i coupe (it arrived on Saturday) but it was somewhat bittersweet as BMW screwed up my order. For some unknown reason it was built without the M V-spoke bi-color orbit grey wheels ordered that trigger Chromeline so to my shock I'm staring at my car with Cerium trim.

We checked the order and the only difference from my original Davit Grey order sitting on their showroom floor was change in color (Tanzanite), ZDA package (vs ZDX on the Davit Grey - which is why I reordered in the first place) and adding Carbon Fiber for the interior trim. So WTF?

My SA leaped into action based on my input that given the window trim is Shadowline to eradicate the Cerium from the car. Good news is BMW has recently released all the parts necessary: Shadowline grill, kidneys and the tail pipes. That along with carbon fiber mirror caps says good bye to Cerium. Plus, swapping the rims on the original Davit Grey with the new Tanzanite which they did today before I drove it home.

Truth be told I agonized over Shadowline vs Chromeline but settled on the latter as figured it would make the Tanzanite pop more. If I ordered a Sunset Orange, Mineral White, Saphire Black, etc. would have went with the Shadowline from day 1. So now I end up with Shadowline but can be happy with it vs another 3 month wait and the risk that the incentives drop and/or the financing rates go up.

Of course my dealer is eating the entire cost of the parts plus labor to install and threw in a couple of other items as well. So I'm a happy camper at the end of the day but I was obviously totally stressed out and pissed off at the beginning. Here's a couple of quick pics but will follow-up in a few weeks (was told 10 days on the parts to arrive) with the car in its full glory with Cerium eradicated.

You've really been through the mill, but your dealer certainly deserves applause for treating you correctly and doing everything possible to fix these repeated errors. That said, though I can't quite follow all that you wanted, all that they did erroneously, and all that they're going to do to fix it...I kinda like the car as it is. (Full disclosure: I'm an old guy.)

I LOL'd on the old guy disclosure as so am I and hence the Chromeline desire vs the modern trend of Shadowline. Agreed on the dealership and can recommend BMW North Scottsdale to anyone in AZ that's looking for a new BMW. Will also be happy to pass on the SA name whom helped me with my wife's 2017 X5 order and has literally bent over backwards to make my M850i desire a reality including eating this order if I wanted to go for round 3. I joked with him that I didn't want to litter his showroom with yet another failed build given we can make it right with the Cerium eradication program.

I am in the process of ordering an M850i GC and have not been able to see Tanzanite in person. Would appreciate pictures in good sunlight to see what it really looks like, otherwise it's going to be Carbon Black.

Totally understand as went through that same process although Carbon Black was never on my list (everyone has personal preferences). I originally wanted Sunset Orange but never was able to see that in real life until recently as my dealer now has a M340i in stock in Sunset Orange. Definitely a great color but I nixed it as once I fell in love with the Fiona Red/Black interior my exterior choices centered around that.

I was able to see all of the Individual colors before finalizing my 2nd order (1st one was Davit Grey) and hence going with Tanzanite. The beauty of Tanzanite is you almost get two cars in one, i.e., at night you for all practicality have a black car and in the daylight WOW!

Took a few quick pics in the AZ sun (day I picked it up it was overcast from the last couple of days worth of our Winter rain season). The shots are focused on the Tanzanite 3-layer paint which hopefully the upload does not reduce the resolution on). I did throw in one interior shot as not sure on your personal preference but Fiona Red/Black is an amazing interior and goes incredibly well with Tanzanite. FYI the carbon fiber roof blends nicely with Tanzanite although the pic makes it seem to contrast more than reality.

Thanks and to your point I'm already loving it! Granted I was a bit shell shocked when they lifted the cover in the receiving bay to find out the order was wrong but in the end once the Cerium eradication program is complete I'll be a 100% happy camper.

Uploaded a few more pics to help out sfy2905 in his decision for an exterior color for his M850i GC order. Once the Cerium eradication program is completed I'll upload some pics of the final state in all of its glory.

Thanks, bloozemanAZ! Tanzanite looks stunning in the sun, sort of like Porsche Genetian Blue. I actually had already zeroed in on Fiona Red/Black interior. My 911 Targa 4S is Midnight Blue with Bordeaux/Black interior, so I already like the red interiors with blue exteriors. I just wasn't sure if Tanzanite had a green component to it.

Definitely zero green in Tanzanite. Love the Targa as truth be told a 911 has been on my shortlist (a 4s specifically) but at 6'6" I've never been able to comfortably fit in one. Tried the new 992 and unfortunately the same outcome. Given your existing color scheme a M850i GC with a Tanzanite exterior and Fiona Red/Black interior is a total winner.

FYI on two things. First the full leather option is worth the $. Second is make sure you order with the ZDA package. The BMW US website is still broken and only offers the watered down ZDX package.

Thanks for the advice! I think Tanzanite will be the winner and I will make sure I get the full leather ZDA Fiona!

Best of luck with your GC order. Just one clarification, i.e., the BMW NA website does support the full leather option. The issue is with the ZDX (aka Driving Assistance Package 2) vs ZDA (aka Driving Assistance Package). The website "build your own" configurator does not support ZDA and without it the car does not get 3D view, Parking Assistant Plus and Drive Recorder. The cost differential between ZDX and ZDA is a piddly $600 so one would assume that any prospective buyer/leaser in the 8-series class is not going to sacrifice $600 on a $120k plus car.

My initial "walk away" from the first M850i order was centered around the lack of 3D view which is extremely useful (paid for it in my wife's X5) as we both use it daily while parking her X5 in our rather tight garage). What I've recently discovered is that Drive Recorder has the advantage that in the case of an impact it automatically saves the 20 seconds before and after the event.

The irony is just today I had a conversation with a co-worker whom had an accident in his older 330i in which there were no witnesses and the police officer at the scene (after the fact) could not prove one way or another that the other driver whom ran a red light was at fault. Thus, the 20 seconds prior could be enough to prove the other driver was running a red light. So between 3D View and Drive Recorder the $600 is well worth it (unless you want to go with a full dash cam solution). Plus, throw in that with the BMW Connected App you can get a real-time 3D View of what is surrounding your car on-demand ZDA is absolutely golden.

There is a Tanzaniite Blue M850xi sitting at my local dealer. My SA offered me 16% off MSRP. I was very tempted, but I had to walk away since I need a sedan. If you are in the market for one, PM me. I can give you my SA's contact.

BMW realigns these packages so frequently that I'm not surprised that even the company can't keep track of them.

Interestingly, my 2019 M850xi convertible, build date 12/13/18, has ZDA and ZDY but no Drive Recorder, which would be nice to have. The details:

ZDA Driving Assistance Package ($900): Parking assistant plus, active blind spot detection, frontal collision warning w/city collision, lade departure warning, rear view camera, surround view w/3D view.

ZDY Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700): Extended traffic jam assistant for limited (something or another), active driving assistant pro.

I am really confused by all of the option packages missing and/or present needing to be replaced in the OP, but that is one sharp looking car, regardless of the trim!

Congrats. You people have got me psyched to go play with the configurator...

The configurator supports everything minus the Drivers Assistance Package (ZDA) as the only thing it offers is the Drivers Assistance Package 2 (ZDX) which negates 3D view, Parking Assistance Plus and Drive Recorder.

The issue on the 2nd order is for whatever reason BMW built it without the 20" M V-spoke bi-color orbit grey wheels that trigger Chromeline. That was a fluke vs the configurator.

So now we know 2 things that are at least different between the 2019s and 2020s. The first being that the Comfort Seating Package (ZSB) is now standard on the 2020s. The second being the ZDA package on the 2020s includes:
  • 5DN Parking Assistant Plus
  • 6DR Drive Recorder
  • ZN1 Active Blind Spot Detection
  • ZN3 Frontal Collision Warning w/ City Collision Mitigation
  • ZN4 Lane Departure Warning
  • ZX2 Rear view camera
  • ZX3 Surround View w/ 3D View

With the add being Drive Recorder. Although the Driving Assistance Professional Package (ZDY) has a bit of language difference in the packages I believe they are the same for both the 2019s and 2020s.
