Ok, well, this has obviously nothing to do with the car…. Bent rims are just totally bad luck. On my very first drive with my m850 went up for a weekend getaway, a construction lip on the highway bent 3/4 rims!! First drive!
Have you considered sizing up the tires? I’m considering this. Others have with no issues and improved ride and protection.

I found that the Michelin PS3ZP tires are better at absorbing harsh road hits (or Michelin non run flats). My 8GC has Goodyear Asymmetric 5 and these are brutal when hitting even small holes in the road. I've already bent one. Getting ready to dump the Goodyears.

You guessed it sir!
Mainroad was doing work on a stretch of the hwy, speed was reduced to 80km, I was probably doing 85/90ish, came up to the end of the grinded surface of the road where there was a lip that meets up with the old surface, BAM! I thought the airbags were going to deploy, must have been a 1.5” lip and immediately felt an oscillating vibration in the whole body of the car. Apart from the above, my favourite summer drive though! I’m lucky to live in Vancouver all my life.

It's to the point I won't take the M850i into uncharted territory around the Phoenix metropolitan area. Rather I bird dog it with the wife's X5 first and then if I go back for whatever reason I know where the potholes are, etc. In fact the wife's best friend has such a nasty stretch of road to her house when we go there for dinner, etc. it's always the X5. I'm guessing there's some fine print on maximum number of claims or value within a 12 month period. I need to check the tires/wheels package I picked up for the wife's LCI 40i last August. Mainly did it for curb rashes (she already has done so on the front passenger rim) as over the next 5 years it will pay for itself. Hard to bend a rim on a X5 but likely doable in the worst case scenario. The tire coverage is just gravy train in case of a nail, etc. |

On my m850 bent rims drove me crazy. They actually have a smaller sidewall then a M8. I sized up tires and it's helped tremendously.

You know what amazes me the most is hearing people bend the OEM rim on these hogs... lol Those rims are so strong compared to many aftermarket lighter solutions that I think if I ever lived in a state that bent BMW OEM rims, I'd just start driving trucks. lol I feel for you that is such a kick in the ass when something like that happens.

This is a common complaint from many owners with OEM low profile tires from any car brand.
There's a few people on the Mercedes forums where MB bought back S classes with 21" wheels because owners where blowing tires almost monthly.

So if you size up on tires what are you using on 20” rims? Wouldn’t it cause your speedometer reading to be slower than actual, which is already 3-4% low from the factory?

It's common to size up or down. Just keep the difference between front and rear under 3%. I run a square setup so it's even better than oem. The car is over 4500lbs so there's no sense in the car with those tiny 245 tires. 275 at least..

so sounds like the 20s on the 8 series is just as bad as any non suv bmw wheels?
was just going to start a thread regarding the longevity of the 20s but I guess 19s are the way to go? |

The roads here are horrible and I have no issues with bent wheels. Keep your tire pressure high, it goes a long way.

High pressure (stiff tires) or lower (softer)? I'm considering an 8GC with 20" wheels but the bent wheel probability is giving me pause. No issues for 7 years on 19" BMW OEM wheels and go-flat Michelins. The 19" wheels are nice but I prefer the 20"

More likely to transfer the shock of hitting a pothole to the wheel and bend it.

I believe high pressure helps as well. It makes the sidewall stronger.

It doesn’t….running them a few PSI higher isn’t going to do anything. Just don’t run it at 50 PSI. However, I feel anything less than like 36-38 cold PSI on large wheels is asking for it.

Not as I’ve experienced it. A tire is part of the suspension. It’s the same concept as running higher profile tires to protect wheels. Touch wood….I’ve never had a bent BMW OEM wheel. I’ve lowered my tire pressure from 39/41 to 35/36 without issues. It’s the same reason most people tell you to dump the shitty stiff sidewall runflats for more compliant non-runflats.
