2020 M850i GC decision vs 2020 M5 LCI

Hello, I'm looking to order a 2020 M850i GC in March for a June delivery. I also considered waiting for the M5 LCI to be released. I see the M5 on the road a little more often then the 8 series (particularly the M850i GP), I learned via a couple of sales guys that the M5 has better lease rates then the M850i. My build cost between the two was a difference of about 2-3k higher for the M850i. Can anyone speak on the lease rate difference, why the residual is higher for the M850i GC?

You may be better off with a late July delivery and getting a '21.

You mentioned a June delivery so either way a 21 M5 or 21 850 should only be another month or so of waiting.

I went back and forth on this since my M6 was due in April of this year. I was really close to getting the M5 (lots of solid deals right now) but couldn't stand the idea of missing the LCI by a few months.

Overall my experience is that the owner loyalty credit (if you're eligible) is more aggressive on the "heavy" cars which are the 7s and the 8s and there are different BMW incentive programs each month. For me I got $2k owner loyalty and $3k BMW incentive on the M8.

The residuals on the M850s are decent but recently the M5 is stronger.

If you're between a M5 and a M850 I would wait for the 2021 LCI M5. If I remember correctly there is at least a 4-5% higher residual with the M5 so you get more bang for your buck. Combine that with higher dealer incentives and owner loyalty credit and you are getting a decent deal.

If you can find out the moment they will let you order a 2021 M5 you can "lock" in the program and residual so there aren't any surprises once you put down the deposit. If the programs get better by the time the car lands, most dealers will let you convert the deal to the more attractive rates.

At least that gives you the chance to compare the M850 deal with the 2021 M5 deal and see which one is stronger and then pull the trigger on what you want.

Awesome information and advise!!! That helps my decision making a great deal.

I am leaning towards the M5 LCI. My current lease ends May 13, and my turn-in date is June 20. I had a talk with my sales guy about the idea of waiting to see the M5 LCI instead ordering the M850i in March.

My sales guy is a good friend and will take great care of me on savings - in addition to my loyalty eligibility.

Currently, BMW has a "Flagship" program going on that's month to month. The 8 series is on the list but, not the M5; however, the residual his higher for the M5 giving my sales guy more room to discount.

Is there something known about the M5 LCI you're waiting for? I've been reviewing the pics and I don't see anything positive.

The M5 LCI gets the updated head/tail light design (with laser light) like the 7 & 8 series.

The Infotainment Center will be upgraded.

Not sure of anything else

There isn't anything major changing with the LCI but even if it's small changes the geek in me would be frustrated to have a discontinued model a few months after getting a new car.

One other thing - you can extend your lease for 3 months same payment with no reason and up to 6 months if you have a production number that you provide BMW Financial Services. You can arrange it yourself or the dealer can do it for you.

Like you said, the higher residual plus the BMW incentives helps create a lower cap cost (on BMW's dime) before they do any of the discounting at the dealer level. Chances are you will get more car for less money.

Best of luck on the new ride!

Full disclosure as I'm out of the market now with my 2020 M850i but in your decision I'd also check if a March order for a M850i GC is even in the cards from an allocation with your dealer. 2020 M850i coupes are done from an allocation standpoint based on info in the forum but not sure on the status of 2020 M850i GCs.

Good point...

I saw the order guide on the form for the coupe and convertible, but not for the GC? I know that order guide shows the cut off dates too.

I'll confirm with my sales guy

M5 if you want a true 4 door sports sedan, otherwise M850i GC if you want looks. And yes wait for the LCI with the iDrive 7
