Some 2019-2020 M850's_ Engine Contamination & A Recall for M8's

This campaign was thankfully done on mine with 16 miles on the odo, it doesn't explain exactly what the contamination was/from, but if yours was built from 10/18-10/19 you should ensure it was done. There's also a recall for the M8 but it does not indicate what for.

The M8 recall is for a transmission wiring harness.

The URL you shared calls out the 8-series coupe manufacturing dates of October 1, 2018 – October 29, 2019 which my M850i falls into (final production date of 10/23/2019. That said this is my first aha moment with BMW and a lack of customer service vs my prior 15+ years with Lexus which was beyond stellar. Why should I be relying on an Internet forum for the information?

Add insult to injury I just turned over 1200 miles last week so WTF now? If I am to believe the campaign bulletin I have exceeded the miles and at risk for possibility of contamination in the engine. Once again WTF? I'll be calling my dealer tomorrow and scheduling the service (along with fixing the F'd hood alignment) regardless of what they say.

Thanks for posting as obviously BMW has zero interest in being proactive on my behalf for an issue they recognize within my M850i build date. Once again so appreciative of the knowledge shared on this forum!

Your car may have had this done prior to delivery so it may be ok (not thrilled hearing about possible engine contamination one bit).

my m850i also have the same production's date range and I'm guessing I would fall into that same category. I have 1400 miles on mine, and I know for a fact that my oil has not been changed since it came from Germany.
I tried to get BMW to service and change my oil at 1150 miles when I took it in for the camera recall. They refused, and now this notice.

Honestly, I agree with BoozemanAZ, I got better service for a decade with Infiniti (Nissan).
As much as I love my m850i, my next car will be something else.

Sorry to hear yours wasn't changed even after you asked albeit for a different reason. I too luv the way the car drives, but have not been thrilled with BMW service nor BMW USA thus far. Although all marques have issues, as a comp my experiences with MB have never been like this. BMW are you listening, do you even care? I'd guess no to each.

I forgot to call the my dealer today but did just check My Garage and nothing is listed in regards to a service bulletin on the M850i. I would assume it would show up there but unless someone can confirm that is true I'm still calling to find out.

Pardon the question, but why would a repair (oil change) not be necessary after 1,200 miles? Does something magical happen to the carefully unspecified "engine contamination" at mile 1,201? Asking for...myself.

Probably too late at that point to make a difference as the contamination may have been burned away by then. I would still like to know what the contamination is, when mine goes back for the fuel smell (still not fixed properly) I'll ask.

You can type your full vin into the website link I provided, it should tell you if it's outstanding or not, but I'd still check with your dealer to be sure..

Great question! I do find it somewhat ironic that the 1,200 miles also aligns with the engine break-in period. So perhaps that is the sensitive time for whatever the situation is. The entire topic reminds me of the Toyota engine oil sludge fiasco from the early 2000s. That did not fare well in the long run and Toyota settled a class action lawsuit due to it.

My guess is that BMW recognized there was an issue with the oil's viscosity used during that manufacturing period. It couldn't have been a contamination in the process of the factory line as the list includes X5/X7 and at least the X5 is manufactured here in the US so multiple plants involved.

It's gotta be something in the oil like water or lesser products that burn up after a while. Still bothers me that they don't do a break in service after 1200 miles.

I had only opened the URL with the PDF but just tried the other one and searched with my VIN. It comes up with "0 Unrepaired Recalls" but then I found the fine print. Which states it will not show "Manufacturer customer service or other nonsafety recall campaign" and that clearly applies to the bulletin you found. So bottom line everyone needs to call their dealer to find out and lodge a complaint if they do not have satisfactory answers.
