It's just personal preference, but the 8-series' interior has gotten a lot of flak on Bimmerpost for good reason. It's too simple a design, especially compared to the car it replaces (6-series). Does it really look any more special than an X5's interior? The 7-series has had the same problem.

Whenever I sit in an S-class, whether it be coupe or sedan, there's a sense of occasion. It looks and feels more expensive than any other Merc.

Regardless, the M specific interior upgrades dress it up nicely.

The crystal glass shift knob in the 850i is incredible.

Maybe good looking, but way too looooooong for a coupe. Seen it in the flesh, couldn't get past it.

I'm really not a fan of the screens either. Looks like an afterthought

Curiously the rear track on the M850i is 1642mm and on the M8 it is 1632mm. With the rear tyre only being 10mm wider the top corner of each tyre is actually 5mm further in than on the M850i.
Thanks for that, thought the ultimate width difference would've been minimal.
The rear width decrease is curious, not sure why they would've gone for that.

I think that 8-series is the new 6 and I am not quite sure what BMW are doing with their naming?!
perhaps you have not been keeping up with BMW... as opposed to the other way around.

BMW has killed the 6 series coupe and gran coupe.

the 6 series currently is a 5 door hatchback... er " GT"

https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/6-se...n-turismo.html

the 6er as you knew it has been moved up market in terms of " styling", and pricing and is now the 8er

BMW has recalled the 850 moniker from the original 8 series and now also brought out an actual M8, which they did not do back in the 1990s.

BMW has 8 series grand coupes (aka sedans) on the horizon as well.

The 8 series also has 4 wheel steering, (not just active sway bars) which is a feature that was never in the 6er.

With that.. you should be up to date...

I am actually up to date, I read a lot about it, if not only about it, I drive one (see my name) and have driven bimmers for a while now.
I know that they killed the 6'er leaving just the GT but thats besides my point.
I just see a number change (6 to 8), no change in size, I tried sitting at the back and could not, I am 6ft. I have no such issues in an S-coupe and even E-coupe could be said that is slightly bigger at the back than the 8.
As for 4 wheel drive/steering etc thats just newer age, fashion and tech, I know you'll agree. You would not use the same logic and say that the new M5 is not a 5'er anymore just because it has 4 wheel drive, would you? New tech should not give it a new number, size does.
I just do not think that the 8 is in the same size (or class) as the S.
Now, I am not sure of the following but I am pretty convinced that the 8 is on the same platform as the 5'er and not the 7.
Whereas the S-coupe I would have thought is on the same platform as the S. And S is in the same size (class?) as the 7 and not the 5'er, right?
What am I missing?

I guess that the 8 series is finally a vehicle that doesn't get bigger based on number, which is indeed incongruent with the rest of the lineup.

Instead it's badged as an 8 series.. based on pricing ..

I'm not so sure it's designed to compete with Mercedes S class at all and really more as a possible Alternative to a 911 and Panamera , hence the lower than 6 series roofline.

I agree. In essence they simply changed the 6 to an 8, added more tech and added 25k to the price ..

If I'm doing the math at the rear, that's -10mm for the track but +10mm x 2 for the tires as there are 2 tires, which results in +10mm total, meaning each rear wheel is 5mm further out on the M8

It's 4600 lbs. It is still heavy. It's just not as heavy as it's competition.

Definitely not in the E-coupe class category ; the latest generation 6 started way above the E-coupe price range, though the 8 doesn't necessarily compete with the S-class coupe, its one class above the E

Both the 5 and 8 series share their platform with the 7 series.

And the last gen E coupe was based on a C-class platform and yet nobody ever compared it to the 4 series or 3 coupe. The 6 was always between the E and S class coupes in terms of size and price. The 8 retains the size of the 6 but has been moved further upmarket with a price to match, to compete with the S coupe and SL.

There really needs to be a more distinct difference, looks wise, between the 850 and M8 than that

It is still worthwhile mentioning that the M8's wheels don't seem to be tucked further in than the M850i's, which is what the initial claim was.

As long as that competitor isn't a 911 turbo. In that case it's a 1,000 lbs too heavy.
There's a significant price difference between the Turbo and the M8. No doubt they are NOT competitors. One is a super car/exotic and the other is a luxury sports car. Very different classes.

Both cars look great here, but I'd probably have to test drive both before deciding if I was in the market.
