A question about the new Toyota Headquarters in TX....

I drive by the site everyday, and it seems that there is some sort of fabrication facility being built in the very front. And, I ask myself daily, if they may be fabricating cars here (I know, its not a factory), will they test them on site? Is there room on the grounds for a test track? And, I again frequently ask myself, if there is a test track, would it ever be open to the public?

Isn't a Toyota test track just a mall parking lot or an elementary school drop off?

Mostly kidding, but their current lineup is pretty bland. That's gotta be a bug facility if they'll have 10k employees up there. I haven't been up that way in a while, but would like to see what's going on.

Hi I live literally across the street from the build site. I see no test track so to speak anywhere over there. There are multiple buildings going up and the build site is huge though.

There are lots of testing facilities in Arizona. I don't think that's where anything is really developed though.

There's a couple of acres to the west of the facility that are not being built upon

A recruiter told me they are expanding their R&D facility on the site which may be what you are seeing. I have not heard anything about a test track and would highly doubt they put one at that site given the current land area and the amount of people going to work there. I believe you can google a map of what the campus will look like.

A large manufacturer would never allow the public to use their test track. Why would they expose themselves with such a massive liability?

Slightly OT but, how long have you lived around here? I've lived in the area 16yrs and I still am amazed at the sheer growth and development! Particularly right there at the Toyota site. Nebraska Furniture Mart and all of that ginormous development on the South side of 121 between the Tollway and The Colony.
*edit* of course I remember when 121 was a 2 lane road! Now it's a massive 8 lane Tollway.

I've been in McKinney (but Frisco schools for my kids) since 2008, working in (gulp) Southlake for 5 years. I used to really enjoy that drive also, but 121 is too congested now. I hear they will be expanding it to 8 lanes soon.

Pffft...I was living in Plano when the DNT was "finished", ending just past Spring Creek Pkwy. Central was 6 lanes (3 each side) with the worst/shortest entrance ramps. 121? That was just a FM road in the middle of nowhere. For over a decade the pillars for the GB interchange at Central just stood there with nothing else resembling construction really around it. The entirety of N. Dallas, Plano, Allen, Frisco, and McKinney really blows me away. I spend a lot of time up there even though I live in SA. Actually headed up there again (last visit was Labor Day weekend) in 3 weeks.

Which is why I live basically smack dab in downtown Dallas. Can't stand the 'burbs, particularly up there. I get why they're there to a point, and the growth is amazing since it's a byproduct of the relative prosperity we enjoy in Texas -- as evidenced by Toyota's relocation.

But the sprawl (basically for the sake of sprawl and nothing else), the homogeny ... well, like I said: not for me.

(BTW: Lived here since 1991. Back then, Plano was just starting to expand past Preston Road. Frisco? Basically what Anna and Celina were five years ago; a farming town.)

I moved there in 1985 and moved back to West Texas in 1990. I was back there all the time over the next 26 years and saw this myself, as well. I remember exactly what you're talking about. I had to visit Presbyterian Hospital in 1993. I couldn't believe that Plano was moving that far out. On another occasion, back in 1997, I was visiting my best friend who was living among the massive sprawl that had sprung up around that same hospital (NONE of that was there in 1993). I remember the first time on "New Central" back 2000. I was just in awe. Now I'm visiting my friends in the early stages of the urban sprawl consuming LITTLE ELM! Driving up the DNT just in disbelief of all the crap I'm passing through till I take the very last exit off it to cruise over west and then north. Just craziness and I would look for the same type of living location as you if I were to move there again.

To wit, when was the last time you were here? Same crap! I've been here 12 years and the changes are almost too much and almost unrecognizeable in places since I've been coming here starting 1999 (that same best friend I mentioned above moved here in 1998). I had house out in Helotes. The commute went from bad to worse in 6 years to such a degree, I sold the son of a bitch and moved inside Loop 1604...then I moved further in toward 410 (following Viffermike's logic) so I only have to drive 15 mins. to work.
