SUV Suggestions?

Hi all,

I am looking to get an SUV, I currently drive a RAV4 V6 Sport and it has been a reliable car, but I want to upgrade to something nicer. More comfortable ride and more features etc.

I have a few SUV's that I like but can't decide which would be better, also this is related to should I lease or buy.

These are ones that I am looking at X5, XC90, MDX. I initially thought I would lease the X5, but now considering used (CarMax) or CPO. I saw a 2015 X5 35i with 12k miles for $46,000, with cold and premium package. is this a good price?

CPO around my area with around 30,000 plus miles are around $49,000 and up.

The MDX would be more reliable and give more cargo room with the 3rd row down.

The XC90 would be nice as I like the look and the interior but reading a lot of reliability issues.

I need something reliable and that I can keep for more than 5 years.

I picked up a '14 GLK 250 Bluetec a few months back. 30KM pretty nicely equipped for $40K. Comfortable enough, drove to florida and back the mileage is amazing and you wouldn't know it was a diesel unless you're outside and hearing it idle. Lots of power, and pretty quick. Just my two cents.

Have you looked at the Jeep Grand Cherokee at all? I bought my wife a 2015 Overland and it is a very well built SUV. It honestly has tons of creature comforts and is on par with the X5 that I had as a loaner. We got the V6 and it has plenty of power if you are not planning on pulling a trailer and gets decent fuel mileage.

If you get an MDX, do NOT get one with electronic dampers. $uch a nightmare! Will cost you thousands and thousands. Also, if it has Nav, do not get the ones that have the nav unit under the driver's seat. Such a stupid place to put it. More reliable, LOL! I am an Acura Tech BTW.

I was thinking of the 2017 MDX, if I go the MDX route it will be new.

What do you guys think about the CarMax X5 that I posted? good deal?

You should consider a used X5M... it's one of the fastest SAV's made, it has lots of features and the price has dropped significantly in the past year

There's nothing like smoking an AMG at a green light with a trunk full of groceries

The X5 35i has a 6cyl engine... not much pep for a 5k lb SAV

Better. But most Acura Techs I know would recommend the RDX over the MDX, unless you NEED the extra space.

Our lease is about to expire on our '14 Overland Hemi which my wife drove. We replaced it with a Highlander Limited (got a SUPER cheap lease). Anyway, I've been driving the GC myself for the last few weeks and really like it. I'm actually pondering buying it at lease end because we've only put 28k on it in 3+ years. It has a TON of bells and whistles. Really torn....

Yes I do need the extra space and from what I have read the MDX ha s a more comfortable ride than the RDX.

I would try them both. Our General Manager gets a free company car. He had an MDX for a month, gave it back and is now driving an RDX.

Not on the list.. but Ford Explorer Sport, tons of kit for a cheap used.

I would say get the X5, best driver out of the bunch, CPO and a diesel.

I was looking into these before getting our Highlander but was scared off by the huge amount of stranding failures people were having. Not something I felt comfortable having my wife and kids in.

Agreed, although I would totally go turbo v8.

So a CPO X5 is recommended, how does the warranty work, if it is less than 50,000 miles, it will be covered under warranty and then the CPO would cover it after it goes over 50,000 miles.

Yes, you're covered by the factory warranty up to 50k miles or four years, at which point the CPO takes over.

Maybe too big for what you're looking for. 2 years ago I got a CPO Mercedes GL450, it never ceases to surprise me how much it can carry. There is not a lot of cars can hold 3 car seats on the 2nd row. Very comfortable ride. When it comes off from warranty I'm going to get one of those tunes that gives it 500HP should be more fun to drive when by then...!

Are we talking about the current gen? I haven't heard of any such things. We have a ton of them for work and no issues.

Haha turbo V8 it is.. haha

I'm sorry but non of the SUVs that are suggested are on par with the X5, though I may be a little biased

Personally I find the MDX to be a very safe choice but a very boring one as well.

X5 is solid but it's a BMW and there's going to be reliability concerns and/or expensive maintenance involved.

The new XC90 is a super solid vehicle albeit an absolute snooze to drive compared to the Bimmer. Maybe wait a few months until the second model year is released? They will resolve some of the issues.

The new XC60, whenever that is due, will be awesome. That said it will be tough for anything to top the Macan in my mind, if that's enough SUV for you.
