Brew your own beer?

Hey guys,

Thinking about taking up the hobby of brewing my own beer. Anyone have some good websites or resources I could use to read up on this? What kind of start-up costs am I looking at? Experiences?

Thanks

I've been brewing my own beer for about a year now and have always ordered my supplies from http://brooklynbrewshop.com/

I'd also recommend getting a book like The Brewmaster's Bible by Stephen Synder or The Complete Joy of Home Brewing by Charlie Papazain. Both are great reference guides and explain the process in depth so you understand what you are doing while brewing.

My friends and I have been brewing our own for the past 1.5 years.

It's a trial and error sort of hobby. Even following directions to a "T" doesn't mean you're beer is going to be great. We've had only 2/7 brews that we received good reviews on from those we shared with.

We just bottled an Imperial IPA on Saturday.

It's not that difficult, but it is easy to fuck up.

Give it a try. I'd recommend doing the boiling outside because the house will smell. As recommended check out some forums, I'd also recommend watching the 'Good Eats' special on brewing. Gives you a simplistic view of the process.

Aren't you concerned about contaminating the wort?

You're not going to contaminate it because you're boiling. We boil, cool off in ice bath and then pour into fermenting bucket, bring inside, add yeast and let the yeast do there thing.

You have to be more concerned with using filtered water.

If you ever go by a brewing shop while they're brewing, they're always outside.
