Just picked up 2020 M850 GC - Exhaust Gurgle

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Just came from dealership with my new ride and the first thing I’m noticing is the exhaust doesn’t seem as “burpy”. Yesterday I had one of their loaner 840 Coupes and it was FAR more “vocal”. I would think when in Sport Plus, mine should be at least equally as talkative.

Could it have anything to do with the fact it only has 15 miles on it? Could I be victim of the software change to quiet these down?

It's the new software update.

Dammit! Did you pick up your car in the US? I wonder if the 2021 M8 comps will have that software too?

I thought the exhaust noise rules only applied to the European market due to the new noise regulation released there in recent years. Would be surprised if this applies to US market too.

Have you went into the "engine sound" menu that's in the general settings to make sure the burbles are turned on?

Currently driving a 2020 M850 with latest software, and it burbles every single time I lift my foot off the throttle, no matter the speed.

It was kinda cool for the first few days, but after a while I found it to be a little excessive.

Damn! It's build date was 06/2020 and it's currently running 3/2020/.40 software. Do we know which builds are still safe with the old exhaust sounds?

Yes...went in there. I believe there are 4 options. Change with driving mode, Sport, Reduced, Normal (I'm kind of guessing at those last two but I have it set to Sport I know).

It's a 03&07 / 2020 software problem

It's only in sport and sport plus mode. Comfort mode and eco modes won't give you that sound. Also sport individual if you adjust the engine down.

It's not something that can be adjusted, unless you use bimmercode to code it off.

Yes...went in there. I believe there are 4 options. Change with driving mode, Sport, Reduced, Normal (I'm kind of guessing at those last two but I have it set to Sport I know).
The modes are "adaptive", comfort, sport and eco. The m8 has road and track.

Eco and eco individual is useless for most drivers. Comfort is the "default" standard.
Sport, sport plus and sport individual is for the power and it's where most the m850i drivers keep it and adjustments in there.

Adaptive is something like $5k extra for most bmw, but it's standard on the m850i. It's best used with the gps nav and about 1k+ miles. The car AI is supposed to predict where you're going and then adjust accordingly.
Thus, if you're on a highway coasting 30 miles - it should run eco mode and conserve fuel. Then as you get to your exit, it puts into sport mode for the steering and power merge. Then comfort mode for the main road until gps says it's time to merge or adjust.

It's cool toy, but it's probably more predictable to keep it in comfort or sport; vs trying to adjust turn by turn with the GPS.

The settings are "Depending on driving mode", "Sporty", "Balanced" and "Reduced". However, this control is primarily for the fabricated in-cabin engine sounds pumped through the audio system. The caveat in primarily being as when I did some initial testing with my 2020 M850i back in the March if I selected "Reduced" it also seem to effect my Sport Individual settings and override the engine and transmission which were on Sport. Basically, it impacted the burbles as well.

Post that testing the latest 11/2019.70 iDrive release has apparently neutered the Sport engine setting from an exhaust sound POV. Hence, I now have the engine configured as Sport Plus but leave the transmission at Sport. I used to be able to elicit burbles on demand with the engine in Sport but now the only way to do so is in Sport Plus.

I keep the iDrive Engine Sound setting on "Depending on driving mode" as the fabricated engine sound does not bother me especially given I generally run the B&W audio volume at 40% plus and the music rules over the engine sound. This also allows for the time on the highway in which I'm in Comfort mode with the wife in the car for the fabricated sound to in essence be "Reduced" and not be overbearing given the B&W audio volume is at 20% best.

They do but for whatever reason BMW appears to be reducing the exhaust noise here in the US as well unless you are in Sport Plus (or leverage Sport Individual and put the engine setting to Sport Plus). The impact has been posted on a few of the iDrive upgrade threads.

Sorry for the confusion. You are listing driving modes whereas I was attempting to recall the list of exhaust options from within iDrive menus. bloozemanAZ correctly pointed out the list is "Depending on driving mode", "Sporty", "Balanced" and "Reduced".

Are you saying BimmerCode offers a way to revert the exhaust gurbles back to a pre-03/2020 software neutering? I haven't used that in a while but would definitely break out the ENET cable for this.

So is the consensus these software induced exhaust changes are 100% not supposed to mess with Sport Plus mode?

Per my original post, I feel like it does here in the US too.

2020 loaner 840i Coupe = sounds great in sport plus (unfortunately I forgot to look at the software version)

2020 M850 Gran Coupe = not as great in sport plus (03/2020.40)

Unfortunately, I think it hit every mode with a "tune down" which pretty much neutered Sport which used to burble quite a bit and I could get the car to do so by timing letting off the gas with a transmission downshift as I approached red lights. With the software update the only way I can do this is with my Sport Individual engine setting on Sport Plus. That said Sport Plus cold starts have been lowered as well as the overall exhaust while driving. I wish I could erase 11/2019.70 and go back to 11/2019.55.

That's what I was seeing too. Your results seem to match mine to a T. You just explained it better! Haha!
