M850i Spark Plug Replacement Adventure

Hey all, I’m about to embark on the journey of spark plug replacement on my m850i gc with 48k miles and wondering if anyone else has done it yet. The instructions mention draining and removing the coolant expansion tank which I was hoping to avoid but I haven’t taken a close enough look yet to see if I can lazy my way around that.

Thanks!

Why are you doing the replacement? If your car is a 2021, you are still under full warranty coverage and the dealer should perform that.

Spark plugs are a consumable service item, so wouldn’t be covered by warranty.

It’s a 2020 and spark plugs, like brakes, are not covered by warranty.

Yep you need to buy the Ultimate Care+ package that covers them. Kudos to you for taking the project on yourself. When my time comes I take the total lazy route and just have the dealer do it. Will still be miles cheaper than buying the Ultimate Care package though. 👍

It’s my second BMW where I’ve done the maintenance myself so I’m numb to the WTF moments under the hood 🤣. I’ve got a brake job under my belt on this one and I’m sure coils will be around the corner.

I watched a video on it and decided for myself it's best to let my tuner do it this spring. He's a 4 hour drive and it'll allow me to have him go over the tune on his Dyno to make sure all is good to go after fresh plugs gapped to his specs 😊
Dealership wanted over 900.00 US 🙄

Sounds about right. Dealer wanted 4200 or so for brakes. Noped out of there and bought the parts for around 1600. 4 hours.

Was that for ceramic brakes? I’m guessing it was not, and your parts bill includes rotors and pads?

Not ceramic. Rotors/pads and wear sensors. My rotors were lipped and had minor warping which could be felt under braking so I opted to do everything.

Holy moly as that is steeper than I expected. Thankfully I'm only at slightly under 16K miles and the last service in November the tech sent a video as always and called out good on everything including the brakes with at least another 4mm on the fronts and 5mm on the backs before I hit the BMW spec threshold.

I've always been able to negotiate with my SA on all service. An example is on the wife's 2017 X5 it had a window washer pump leak. Quoted $1K and I said "no thanks" as I'll just keep filling the tank. Thanks to al local BMW indie recommendation just over the phone they quoted $600 as I already knew the issue. Next service on the X5 stated that amount and my SA matched it.

So now I'm saving my pennies for the brake job and will get a competitive Indie quote. Life is too short to sweat the minor details on a shit show of a depreciating lack of asset. 👍

Side note is there's a super long thread on the G05/G06 forum regarding getting an upgrade from iD8 to iD8.5 (which is now rolling out via OTA). Back then in August people were quoting ridiculous $ to have the dealer do it or they wouldn't at all. I said "relationship with your dealer, CA and SA". I picked up the LCI in August and the SA asked me if I wanted 8.5 loaded. I didn't do so as the wife wanted the widgets to match as close as possible to her iD6 split screen on the 2017.
