Actually like 5 frames slower, but more "cinematic".

Like vachss said, slower, but more cinematic. 5D records at 30fps right now which makes videos look more like documentaries than movies. That's probably the simplest way to explain the look. Movies are shot at 24fps which give film a more dream-like quality to them. I'm far from a video expert so someone like rodi can probably explain it way better. I just know this will open up a lot more room for creativity with this camera.

I bet they are hoping those who seriously use the mkII for video to jump to the 1D now instead of waiting.

we see such a difference in film and video because of our experience at the theaters. film is shot at 24fps and the most common shutter speed is 180-degree shutter - or in the digital world: 1/48th of a second @24fps. The closest you can get to this film look with video is to shoot with a 180-degree equivalent shutter: 1/60th @30 fps. but then you still have the higher speed of 30fps so you're not quite there. there's a lot of searching in google you can do to find out why this 24fps is so pleasing to the human eye, i think it's mainly because of its relation to the speed at which we register our vision.
you can't just convert 30fps to 24fps, unfortunately - it won't look the same. but if you're using a 180-degree shutter, you can get closer.

i remember being a kid and watching TV and seeing such a difference between the look and speed of some of the shows (mainly the lower budget stuff like soap operas and shit on nickelodeon) and that of the movies. it always annoyed me to the point where i'd feel the need to change the channel or just quit watching. maybe i'm alone on that one. ha.

i kinda think it was because nikon announced their 24fps recording with the D3s and canon wanted to let their customers know that it was coming. that and they didn't announce it sooner perhaps because of the anticipated 1D.

we even said "damn we should have waited" regarding the 5D2 when the announcement of the 24fps D3s came. one because of the video, and two because we use D3 cameras for photos - we could have replaced two birds with one stone, so to speak. that's not to say we don't love the 5D for video since we use a nikon mount lens adapter, but it's a horrible (in our eyes and experience) camera for most still photography.

but yeah, maybe the hacked 24fps firmware will be available before Canon releases theirs next year.

I see, that makes sense. Too bad my T1i shoots at 20fps in 1080. a little too slow eh.

So... I think I'm going to sell my XH-A1 to buy a 5D body, and 40D + lenses to buy other lenses... Wow! I can't even get 1080p on the A1, and I have to use a huge 35mm adapter if I want to run lenses. Anyone with thoughts?

update: we're 80% definitely selling the D3's and the 5D2 to swap for a couple D3S's.
even though we're losing the 1080 HD, it's very very rare that clients pay for 1080 delivery anyway. if a client is not budgeting for a RED shoot, they've chosen the 5D shoot and also cannot afford 1080 output. besides, we mainly shoot with our RED and the 5D2 is our low-light/night/b-roll monster.
why? because the D3S will have less data compression in their choice in codec and better suppression of the jiggly shutter-rolling effect.

OMG! I'm not the only one! I'd always notice how fluid movements are in soap operas...I hated it too

So...when's the firmware coming?

Really? Care to share why? Curious because I haven't heard that blunt of an assessment before, even for a Nikon shop.

its autofocus is not up to the task when you need it to work and work fast, and follow on what you lock it onto. a couple photographers i've hired for weddings used the mark 1 and the mark 2 and looking at their photos, the autofocus is just not up to par. i doubt it's technique as i've tried it out versus my usual camera, and wasn't happy. this could be countered by learning its nuances and adapting to it, but you'll still miss shots.

another reason is the interface and controls. granted, this is something subjective and something you can get used to, but i feel the controls layout, interface and handling of a nikon are lightyears better, design-wise. it's like canon only uses engineers, but not designers.

another is build quality. the 5D's are not professional line cameras. they're not built to withstand weather and beatings like a pro camera. i've shot my D3 in pouring rain for a week and in extreme snow all day - even in the sandy, wet wind of the beaches. most people don't need that though.

of course, this is my own opinion and from my experience. we use what we're happy with, regardless of what others do. and that's what matters.

Appreciate the insight. Was historically a Canon guy but went with the D200 when I got my first dSLR. I really liked the build quality, ergonomics and user interface. Didn't like the feel of the 5D as much and the UI wasn't as intuitive, although I liked the base image quality of the camera more (I know FF v not but still.) I've been looking to go FF now and was giving the mkII a look since I haven't yet amassed enough lenses that would prevent me from switching camps. D700 looks good but I really want good quality 1080 video...

you're going to take a huge step back in AF if you go from D200 to 5D2.
perhaps stick it out for the D700 replacement or the next small-form FF camera that shoots video from Nikon.

My experience has been about the same - the 5D series is not really a great camera for shooting stuff that is on the move. That is more 1D territory.
