please humor me

a friend of mine has a 2005 RSX type S with about 10k miles on it. He was thinking about trading it in and get the new TL type S. I thought that he would be able to sell it for around $16-17k or so. So we looked it up on KBB.com and it said he could sell it for a lil over $22k. I was shocked. Is this even freaking possible??

Was the $22k on KBB.com for "trade-in value"?
If he's expecting that, I think he'll be sadley dissapointed when he visits the dealership. I've worked in automotive sales, and everyone comes in saying "KBB says my car's worth $X"; in reality, I can count on one hand the number of people who got near that number for their vehicle. You have to also consider things such as market saturation and color. In Metro-Detroit, it's rare for someone to purchase their vehicle (whether new or used), therefor used car's are worth less then in other markets.

it was private sale. I looked it up too and got the same thing. I used to sell cars as well and this just threw all my beliefs out the door.

Yeah, I think a lot of people look at the "private sale" number rather than the "trade-in" number from KBB because they like the higher number.

FWIW, my own experience in buying two new cars recently (the 330i and an Oddysey) -- Carmax gave me much less than KBB trade-in for our 1997 Civic EX, and both Carmax and the Honda place offered much more than KBB trade-in value for our 2000 Accord V6.

Don't you save the tax on used cars in the US?

If so buying a new one means $24K + tax to someone buying it.

I drove RSX (non S) for 4 years. bought it around late 2001 and sold it in 2005. It had 50,000 miles on it. I bought it for 21K OTD and I got 15K back.
