Electrification and the tuning scene

So what will happen to the vibrant aftermarket tuning scene when everything goes electric? It would seem this is going away eventually.

Your thoughts?

Looking at the i3, there's a few tuners selling body kits, spoilers, and lowering springs so that your batteries drag on the ground. Plus, there is always the coding scene to tinker with the various features of the car. Tuning is more than engine power, and tuners will still have non-powertrain customization options to sell for electric cars.....

My expectation is tuning will become primarily coding and cooling.... like with internal combustion everything is designed around a cautious warranty and safety spec

Code to force the battery to send more juice to the motors than they are rated for or should safely be handling (within warranty spec)

And cooling to make sure the battery and motor that are now running above spec do not overheat and melt your car down

I suppose down the road heavy modders will take the type of electric motor and battery used in the 2060 M5 and put it into the 2060 version of a 1 series?

Easy, we will all have our electric daily drivers while we dream of our gas burning, fire breathing, gear shifting REAL cars we still mod and drive on the weekends...

That is until the self-driving thing is down, accidents go to near zero, and insurance for human driven cars goes to such insane levels only one elite can afford. We got 30-40 years tops. Plus AOC will be prez by then so anyone caught driving a petro car will be executed on site. Enjoy it while it lasts!

By that time though we will be more into modding our bodies then cars anyway. I am very much looking forward to M sport cybernetic hip and knee replacements in the future. And
the "John Holmes" upgrade

I don't know, there are some advantages to self driving.

BMW is strongly hinting that in-car sex will absolutely be a thing:

Moving red light districts:

Perhaps in the future, "parking" will be a dated term for teenagers.

I remember the good old days running the new latest and greatest pentium processor and modding it by over clocking it and then Adding cooling systems to manage the heat.
When we are stuck with electric M only I’ll do similar things. Tune the electric m car so the launch control “overboost” will run all the time, add euro mdm, add “ludicrous insane offramp” mode from bm3, add the Switchable rear wheel drive only tune for hooning, and some other coding. If there’s a will (and a market for it) there’s a way! We will be fine.

Don't overlook Formula1-type "push to pass" button on the steering wheel, that shunts the power stored in an aftermarket supercapacitor bank under the hood directly into the motor's input terminals for the ultimate kick in the pants off the line. Fun times (and broken motor mounts) await.....
