What did you consider before your m850?
I was just curious what other cars you considered before your m850? What made you ultimately choose the m850?
I currently have an 18 m550 with high spec options and like it quite a bit. Have had it for about a year, but of course, like many enthusiasts, I'm already thinking about the next option. So far, I'm currently thinking of either a 2022 M3C xdrive with full merino or a 2020 M850 GC. I hope that within 3 years old, they might be within the 50-55k range. I know this is an 8er forum, but why would you choose one over the other?

I will choose the m3 comp over the m850 anyday
It is more nimble and more fun to drive yet as luxurious and spacious and faster then the m850 Also if u love to tune ur car has far more options and cheaper to tune The only one reason u should choose m850 is comfort (softer suspension) or look (if you dont like the front look of the m3) If you are talking m8 comp vs m3 comp it is a different t story |

Just for the record I did that regardless as to the deal my CA offered on the M5C in Dravit Grey. Wind the clock forward and I have zero regrets. Bottom line being buy and drive what is your passion as ultimately amongst the options your considering they are all winners. |

My question to you is, why not the M5C? Priced a bit closer to the M850 and still sedan. Disclaimer: I think the M850 is great but I'm one that goes full top range when looking at models, I don't want an M550 I want M5CS, that is why I ordered the M8 Comp. At these prices money does not become the factor for me.

This was last December, so the market was quite different and the information on the G8x was limited. TDLR; but my thoughts on each of these: I had driven a 2018 M550 prior to getting my F80 and was impressed, it was a close call then and they were about the same money and straight line speed, but figured I might as well get the full M otherwise I may regret it. Sometime in November 2020, while winding down on my F80 lease, I took the M550 LCI for a spin as they were first landing in the US. I was immediately turned off by the driving dynamics, it was fast, but just felt too loose coming from the F80, I might as well been driving my SUV. I immediately looked to the M5 LCI, happened to come across one, and was impressed again. The only thing I didn't like was the interior (mainly the gear selector and dash), but it was livable. I still had 4 months until lease end, so I figured I would wait another month or two before I ordered to see how the G8x shook out. I had seen the G80 and G82 in person a couple of times, loved the interior, was okay with the exterior, but wouldn't have a chance to drive one for a couple more months (likely just after my F80 lease was up). I was still considering getting an early allocation, I had easy access to 2 locally, but I kept thinking about the reason I was looking to move from the 3 series to a 5 series. I spend a lot of time on the highway, splitting about 27,000 miles a year between my two cars, and was really getting sick of taking the F80 on any long trips where having an F80 didn't serve a purpose. I wanted something with less road noise, a bit more comfort, and that didn't make me feel like I had to push it 90% of the time. I figured the G8x would be better, but just didn't want to chance it given my then current frustration with the F80. I also knew I was looking at a slim discount and bad residual to be one of the first G8x leases, and would have been looking at a similar payment ($1000+) to an M5. Really, I was just about to finish a deal on the F90 in December 2020, met with the CA and GM, agreed on a discount, and they were just waiting me to finalize my build and get it rolling. While exiting, I pointed at the M8 coupe they had on the lot for 14 months, laughed and said I could probably lease it cheaper than the M5. Within about 30 minutes of leaving, I was sitting at dinner and my CA text me back with a deal structure on that car letting me know I was right. The GC was just starting to roll out for the 8 series, so my only hesitation was going from the sedan to the 2+2 coupe, but I always liked the body lines, and figured I could make it work for another couple of years. I gave the M850 a brief thought as well, I drove one at it's release and knew the coupe would handles a lot better than the M550 sedan, but for the money, it was just a no-brainer to go with the M8 at the time. Looking back, I'm still extremely happy with my decision for the money. If I were doing it again in today's market, and knowing the G8x exceeded my expectations in terms of non-performance oriented daily drivability, I would likely go in that direction. I'm not quite sure what my next car will be at this point, but I know I wouldn't spend $1500+ a month on an 8. I like the car, but I don' t like it THAT much.

This left me with 2 options under $200k. That was the Mercedes s550 and the BMW m850i. After that, the choice was easy. MB told me to pound sand, and BMW said we can get your numbers. Now there are a couple more options, especially used ones. But it's still rare air to find a 4 seater convertible that fits a family of 4 with a v8. |

No doubt, the M8 is one of the best looking cars that I can think of with power and performance to match.

I was having some issues with my new truck and the dealer wasnt very helpful so I was looking to get another one but didnt like any of the trucks available. I wasn't even sure I wanted a car as I was looking at mainly SUVs. Everyone I looked at just didnt do it for me and figured I can get an old beater truck to take care of whatever I needed a truck for and just get myself a car. I had looked at the Audi A7 and was considering that but I was leaning towards an M550, but when I saw my dealer had an M850 and I drove it and saw it in person, I knew thats what I was getting next.

Was fairly set on Aston Martin before I test drove the M850i. Very happy with the decision, even though the Aston still looks a little better.

I've owned prior 2 generations of M3 and am in a '19 M550 now.
Really wanted Audi RS6 Advant but in current market, really tough to get at a fair price. Same with the Taycan. Strongly considered going back to M3 again as the M550 has been Meh for me. Ended up seeing the M850, and the fact they were the only car MSRP to drop significantly this model year and I could get decent below MSRP in this market if I ordered, kinda made my mind up for me. Its a tough market and M850 is the easy choice. (I hope...will know in a few weeks, lol) |

Sold my 911 C2S for a $13,500 profit and then bought a 2022 M3 xDrive. Kept it 2 months then sold it for a $5,000 profit. Loved both of those cars. Currently, waiting for my new M850i Gran Coupe to get to the dealership. Will be a different car than my past 2…..but should be a decent car👍

I was in a c43 previously - was planning to upgrade to an e53 when my lease was up. I went in for a test drive and was underwhelmed, especially since the monthly payment would’ve gone up by 90% of what I was paying for the c43. I started shipping around - looked at a c8, an LC500, and a 718 Cayman GTS.
Ended up discovering the m850 by accident (gf spotted one on the road and asked if I’d considered it, which I hadn’t yet..) - after test driving one and talking numbers with the dealership, it was a clear win for me in terms of power, luxury/comfort, and monthly payment to MSRP ratio. I’ve had mine for almost a week now after having ordered it in October 21, and I’m loving it! |

I considered a variety of “GT-ish” cruisers, including the other German options. For once, I prioritized cruising comfort and interior design/amenities over pure performance… I have other sportscars to scratch the itch for extra speed, so this time I resolved to buy something more useful for long road trips.
I’m unreasonably irked by small tablets tacked on as center displays, and IMO heavy cars need 500+ HP. Coupe (2 door) design was a must… so the field of choices was further reduced. Exterior styling sealed the deal for me: M850i. M8 cost differential and stiffer ride excluded it from consideration. For context, I sold a 2015 Hellcat Challenger to buy my 2019 BMW. While the Dodge did some things better than the M850i, I wanted something more subtle. Sadly, modern MOPARS are now sometimes profiled as hooligans’ cars. Us older guys that bought ‘em as retro muscle are left shaking our heads in dismay as Insta feeds us daily Hellcat crashes 🙄 Rich |
