M850i coupe or gran coupe?

Hi!

I want to order an M850i xDrive, but I am not sure, if I should take the 2 door coupe or the 4 door gran coupe?

I don't need the rear seats often, but it means a lot more comfort, when you put bags or something behind the front seats. And the doors are taller for easy in and out.

The gran coupe looks a little bit modern, especially the trunk.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

It just depends on your usage and requirements. I bought a Gran Coupe because:

1) I need to have a 3 year old and 5 year old in the back with car seats. They can open the doors and jump in and have leg room.

2) I like the style of the Gran Coupe for the M850ix. If I had gone for the M8C, I would have gone coupe/convertible, but again, kids.

It also comes in handy when we take other people out with us to dinner for example, but that isn't a hard requirement because my wife has an SUV.

Yes, the GC is more suitable for everyday use and I like the style too.

I've never had to put anything behind the rear seats in the coupe, nor wish I had more room or taken the other car for bags and such, the trunk is really quite massive.

Rear passenger capacity for the coupe is certainly the limiting factor, as it takes a combination of an aggressive seating position for the driver and a small (yet not so small they require a booster or car seat) little human for the rear. I'm 5'10" with my seating position all the way forward and my 9 y/o has ample space behind me.

I like the exterior look of the coupe quite a bit more than the GC, to the point where I would say 8 series coupe > M5 > 8 series gran coupe if it were on exterior looks alone. Granted, the 8 is a whole other story on the inside, and is much less pedestrian looking than the 5. It's going to be a tough decision when my lease is up.

Being 6'5".... and kids GC was only option. Plus the original concept car was absolutely breathtaking.

personally for me, I would only look at the convertible or gran coupe. I'd skip the coupe. but it's an option.

for me, I'd go convertible or go for an X5 or M5 for 4 doors SAV or Sedan. the only advantage of the 8 is the convertible, which you can't get anywhere else in the bmw lineup.

the m5 is more practical and the x5 is bigger if you need space. if you're looking at the gran coupe, you should consider the m5 sedan. the new full CS m5c looks amazing in person. I drove one 2 miles and it was amazing quick minute drive.

m5 is beautiful I agree, but it's still a 5 series. The 8 is just so unique.

I agree. But if he's not willing to go full coupe, I'd have a tough time paying the "8" premium for the gran coupe over the sedan. The 4 doors are just too similar, and one is much cheaper also has cheaper add on mods comparatively.

Saaaay what?! The M8 GC body lines are incredibly bold as compared to the M5.

Similar to me is the Land Roved Defender and a Scion XB or a Mitsubishi eclipse and an LC500....

(yes some will be annoyed at this, that's OK because I don't care.)

Thank you guys for your input!

For me the 2door coupe is more elegant, sporty, agile, fast to 100 km/h...
The gran coupe is a plain car, but looks better to me as an 5series sedan. Yes, it have more room for passengers on the rear seats, but this is not a buying decision.

Both are luxury cars and both look very good to me.

Looks are subjective, but there is no doubt that the black 2d coupe in the bottom looks better than the 4 door family car.

Depends on what you're going for and what drew you to the body style. I was specifically in the market for a family capable fastback with some power. I was between an RS7 and an 8 series GC.

That's like saying the band girl is better for you than the Prom Queen.

it might be fine for you; but stepping back and looking at what 90% of the class voted on .... they picked the other girl.

Fair. What I do know is that they're all fun to drive.

Are they putting a different engine in that Scion these days?

I think Resjudicata is considering more than just the surface (4 door BMW sedans with the same engine, transmission, and xDrive system)...

If the GC had a hatch, we'd at least be able to make an argument for it beyond looks of the interior and exterior.

The Z4, 4 series, and M4 all come in convertibles.

not with a v8.

you're correct, I didn't specifically say v8 with convertible; but it's what I meant. there is very few v8 left in the world that's moving to full electric.

It's so ugly Mercedes made their truly horrific copy cat clone GLEs.....

So sad Mercedes doesn't have original ideas.
