I test drove an m850i in April last year for a couple of days, and I absolutely loved it, especially the gurgle / burble when coming down through the gears.

Fast forward a year and I got one of my own. Although I absolutely love it, and it makes my 6 convertible before it feel like a Mini, there's one thing that seems to be missing: that burble gurgle. It's the same engine, with almost the same spec and even a bit higher.

Was this gurgle the result of an extra that I wasn't aware of, as try as I might I can't hear it even in Sport Plus. Is it something that comes as the engine ages (I've only managed to do 2k since mid May)? Assistance would be appreciated.
I've wanted more burple and got the Akra exhaust. Now I feel like there's too much burple so I recommend getting a exhaust if you want more

That works on an M8 but doesn't solve the problem with the M850i that had a better sounding stock exhaust than the M8s to begin with. I know that sounds ludicrous but it's a fact and well covered in various reviews of both cars.

? I don't get what you're saying. I was just saying you should get an aftermarket exhaust to really get more burple. I didn't mention anything about which exhaust sounds better haha

Okay the context is the Akra exhaust solution does not exist for an M850i. Yes, there are some other after market solutions which I'm tracking but if it wasn't for BMW's asinine neutering of a glorious stock exhaust I wouldn't need to do so. It's just not myself but every other M850i owner out there that has had a 2020 iDrive release update applied.

That's all true, and while I haven't verified this: I've heard that some ECU tunes have added the pops, bangs, and gurgles back way more louder and more violent. Apparently it's adjustable on the newer ECU tunes for the M850i, along with removing the auto start stop. In addition to removing top speed limiter and adding more hp. And voiding the warranty, and possibly the emissions for states that check emissions every 2 years like mine.

The last sentence is the deal breaker for me as there is no way I'll void the warranty. With a new car in AZ you get a 2 year pass on emissions but for year #3 the last thing I want is to fight the DMV to keep the car on the road. If I end up buying out the lease (doubtful but I love the car) I'll pursue after market exhaust and more mods when the warranty expires. Yes, I'm conservative and want to hold BMW's feet to the fire for any issues encountered if I do keep the M850i for the long run.

Found this old thread and I have the same issue with the silent exhaust.

Got my M850i coupe yesterday and now it has 620 kilometers on the clock.
There was not one gurgle, bubble or something so I updated the software to 07/2020.54.
And still silent in comfort mode (this is ok), but also in sport plus. Exhaust sound is a little bit louder, but no misfires.

AZ does not measure pollutant levels or sound level at DMV. It is checking to insure your system is properly functioning mechanically. As in does the exhaust leak or do they read pressure, or does the gas cap need to be replaced, and physically is the car in good shape (lights windows ect), and the check engine light is not on. I've modified many newer and older cars here no issues with passing any check unless like my Ford the gas cap doesn't stay sealed so it caused an alarm I had to fix.

Most of the concern people hear about actually only apply to vehicles over 8500lbs. Or more on the commercial side. Even then its a 25-30 MPH level.

I have a 2020 M850i GC with 03.2021 on it. I suspect it has to do with transmission adaptations as well. I can get burbles pretty easily when the rpms hold and I let off the throttle quickly, but it may be because the car is always ready for me to make my next hooliganish move 😂

I wanna share my experiences with the exhaust and missing "pop & bangs".
Unfortunately BMW decided to stop the loudness of the exhausts since a few years and only the first models (2018 and 2019) does this misfires.

My 850i was born in 12/2019 and got all updates (ota). This model never does pop & bangs not even in sport mode.

Yesterday I got a performance increase by ecu programming. Now I have 666,1 PS (657 HP) and 850 Nm.

The pop & bangs in sport mode are there, it sounds great!
You cannot get the misfires back by update the software, only coding the engine control unit is the key!

Funny, they don't seem to have a problem with aftermarket exhaust and 200 cell downpipes: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CTxs-...dium=copy_link

That is odd as the 2019s had a more aggressive exhaust to begin with than the 2020s. I'm guessing it comes down to your locale in Austria and more aggressive neutering than here in the US.

My 2020 M850i has gotten all of the OTAs including the original one that included the unmentioned exhaust neutering feature. Since it was applied the gurgles and pop/bangs disappeared from Sport but still are there albeit slightly less aggressive in Sport Plus. Given Sport Plus' transmission is over kill for daily driving I just use Sport Individual with the engine on Sport Plus and the Transmission on Sport. Works like a charm and keeps me happy with all the true exhaust sound while driving vs the fabricated engine sound.

For what it’s worth my UK 330i definitely doesn’t burble and pop as much now as it did when I bought it two years and 13000 miles ago, assume a software update is the reason.

BMW has some nerve changing what a person bought and paid for 2 years later.
They should leave it the way it was purchased. They should only change the new one's built to the current law of the year for that model.
If you bought the burble they should leave it alone on sold units.

If it can be Programmed/Coded out of the 8 series, then I'd imagine it should be able to be re-coded back in, no? Just need a wizard to figure out the Coding.

On my old '19 M550 there was a hack where you opened the exhaust gates in Sport Plus and then pull the actuator fuse from a panel in the Trunk leaving them in "open" position 100% of time. The Car never threw a code this way. Possibly something that might work on the 8 series too??? (like my new M850)

Exhaust gurgle is engine tuning. Yes, it can be re-coded in, but it would be a new engine tune which would void the warranty. A lot of the tunes out there have a burble option. Some of them can be extreme, though.

I mean it is what it is....all manufacturers are coding this stuff out.

My 2019 M5 sounded awesome the first year or so I had it.....they then "updated" it and it was half as loud.

I just picked up a 22 X5M Comp and it has absolutely no burbles or pops (granted I haven't really played around with it since I'm still in the break in period). That being said....my X5M is louder than any of my past M's (including V10 M6) at cold start base-wise.

I'll second this observation.

The 2021 X6m comp we had was loud as hell on start, but once warm and revving was like a wind up toy spinning off.
