Yep, don't do it, i.e., the software upgrade whatsoever. Can you check the iDrive version your on and post it back to the thread? If somehow you escaped the 03/2020 release you may likely be on 11/2019.55 which as far as I know was the latest release prior to the 03/2020 absolute shit show project "controlled backfire" aside. In fact the thread on the 03/2020 debacle may be one of the longest threads in this entire forum at 13 pages and 269 posts!

I ordered mine in January, but the dealer reminded me that the build date was Feb (I didn’t get it til mid-May due to Covid), so that’s very interesting indeed.

My February built m850 had a software version of 2019.50, sounded more tamed than the 2019.35 is it possible or is it because my car was still in transport mode, I'd like to know because I might refuse the car due to that. But again I asked the rep to try an x5 m50 which was my other choice and it doesn't even sound like a v8, it has the 07/2020 version.

I'll ask again, does anyone here know if BMW can force an update when in for scheduled maintenance? I would imagine some updates may contain changes that affect vehicle driveability/operation and may be considered safety items and be mandatory, which then may also contain other non-essential incorporated changes.

Bloozeman, how do you check the iDrive version? I'm not sure where to look but will get back to you as soon as I find out Thanks.

You can find the iDrive version under Car->General Settings->Remote Software Upgrade.

I have the 03/2020.24 version. No problems with the exhaust. Perhaps the issue is not the original software installed at the factory, but the updates themselves?

Glad to hear this, but I think some here like BM was ok and only changed afterward

That may have been the initial 03/2020 version and did not include the "controlled backfire" modification. There are definitely later versions of the 03/2020 release that will likely include it so if prompted for an OTA upgrade I'd avoid it unless you are having other issues with the current release.

Please stop saying "controlled backfire", the juvenile in me cannot resist... except this once.

Just using the term one of the posters on the thread said a tech at their dealer stated when they inquired on the debacle. Point taken and from now on I'll refer to it as "asinine neutering of a glorious stock exhaust".

Took mine out for a spirited spin (I'm always in comfort across the board) and still got pops and crackles after getting into upper rpms (not max either)...

Quick update on this.

For some reason I never tried starting the engine in any particular mode, as I didn't realise you could do so. I put it in Sport Plus, and definitely get some burbles when doing so (though not every time).

However, whilst in S+ driving around, I'm almost positive I've heard a few, though nothing like as loud as the original one I test drove back in March 19. My OS version remains the same, and have recently checked for updates but none are present. Which is odd in itself, it's Nov 2019.70 but I've seen ones banded around for 03 2020?

It's definitely been "neutered" for the new laws regulations compliance.

11/2019.70 is technically a 2020 release BMW published in the May/June timeframe and definitely includes the exhaust neutering "feature" that started with the 03/2020 release. I did the OTA upgrade from 11/2019.55 to .70 in late June of course not knowing the undisclosed "feature" was included in it as well and have kicked myself ever since for doing so.

Is it the word controlled - so would 'uncontrolled backfire' be acceptable?

Or is it the word backfire - so would 'controlled exhaust noise' be acceptable?

Or is it both words - so would 'random exhaust rumblings' be acceptable?

Really want to get it right

I have a 2021 M850 GC loaner from the dealer right now and this car is actually pretty darn throaty....and this is coming from someone with a F90.

Some of you guys realize you need to go into the car settings and set the engine sound to sport, right? I don't mean the button on the center console but you have to go into IDrive settings. When I got the car, it was in reduced there and I thought "WTF, this car really is too quiet). It wasn't until yesterday I saw that options and it's a totally different car now.

Yes. I was aware. I looked when I bought the car, and btw the default setting appears to be "dependent on driving mode" or whatever it was. Someone must have turned the noise down on your loaner.

Incidentally, I'm not talking about interior cabin noise that's manufactured. I'm on about the physical feeling of the exhaust burbling.

Yeah I have the windows down purposely and it still sounds throaty....way more than my 2019 M550 was.
