Hi all

New here, I did try searching but didn’t have any luck finding anyone with this problem. I have an 840i and recently bought a set of 19” MSW wheels with Michelin Alpin 5 245/40/19 tyres for winter use. Overall they have been great on the car until I noticed a concerning issue the other day. It seem that whenever it rains enough to have standing water on the road and you are doing motorway speeds and wish to brake it causes the car to be unstable and pull to one side briefly. Has anyone had similar before?

I would go back to a tire shop or dealer and make sure your wheels are installed correctly

How heavy are you braking? Does the issue occur on dry pavement? When was the last time alignment was checked. If you are going motorway speed and it’s tire/wheel issue you would notice noise and strong vibration

The wheels and tyres were purchased online and not a local shop to me sadly so taking them there isn’t an option. I fitted the wheels to the car myself, something I have done lots of times with other cars and they are mounted in the correct rotation etc. The car is only a year and a half old with less than 18k miles and if the road is dry or damp I do not get the issue, so I have not had the tracking checked. I braking force does not seem to matter, I can lightly touch them and it happens or if I am braking heavily it happens also. My friend who is a tyre fitter thinks it’s because they are not run flats but I’ve used non run flats on my 4 series no issues before so can’t see how it would be an issue on the 8.

Can you put the original wheels back in to see if the issue disappears.

The weather is starting to get better so I will try changing over again, I’m 99% sure they will be fine and the issue is the tyres I just don’t know why they would behave that way when they are new

Run flat tires or not does not make a difference. If anything the non run flat is lighter and rides better. I had a similar issue with my aftermarket wheels/Michelin PS4 tires and it turned out to be my alignment. My two cents

Yeah that was my thought, I’m getting the alignment checked today. See what they say about that.
