It's funny, in the C8 thread, much was being made of "only DCT?" and at the same time, some were saying that unless it had active cruise control, they wouldn't buy it. The number of people that "really want" a manual are far less than the number that "say" they want it, just like the wagons. Few are willing to put their $$$ where their mouth is.

The bottom line is people have gotten lazy, don’t care much about sports cars, don’t know how to drive manuals, and want to (dangerously) operate their phone while they drive.

Don’t get me started about traffic, either. I drove a manual 911 in Los Angeles for years and loved every minute of it. C’mon!

Nearly all of the drivers who run in the enthusiasts circles I run in drive a manual, and I’ll be open and admit that, if I look in your sports car and don’t see a manual, I can’t help but assume you don’t care about the fine art of driving, and I loose interest in your car, barring that you don’t have an injury or physical condition keeping you from driving a manual.

I even once drove a Lamborghini without a manual and told my wife after to never rent a super car for me as a surprise, unless it has a manual.

I disagree. I've been driving manuals for 20+ years. Enthusiasts are not limited to one transmission. I drive a DCT on the track as do many others who do more than just drive around town stoplight racing. As much as I love the manual, it's going away and I'm not going to stop caring about the art of driving just because I have adapted to the times. I have plenty of fun both on the street and at HPDE's.

I just bought my daughter a VW Golf Alltrack. Great car; great reviews; no one buys it so they are discontinuing it in the US. A station wagon (Estate car for those of you in the UK) with a manual option. But no purchasers to speak of.

Yeah, I prefer driving a manual at the track, too. I just depends on philosophy. When I think about becoming a "good driver," I don't think about posting the best time in my auto club. I think about videos of Ayrton Senna's feet, and until I'm able to perfectly heel/toe and left foot brake without a mistake, wearing loafers no less, I feel like there's work to be done, and I enjoy that. Even if I did actually become that good, I'd still want to use a manual. It's like fly fishing vs. grenade fishing.

Of course, if you said, "Win this race, and I'll give you 10 million bucks," I'd pick the fastest option, but, for amateur driving, I can't think of a scenario where I wouldn't pick a manual. When we're all driving electrics, I more worried about that than I am the actual engine.

Modern automatics get better gas mileage and have better performance and of course as stated above, nobody buys manuals in the US anymore (largely because of the two aforementioned items).

Population is aging. 70 year olds learned mostly on sticks. As sticks disappeared many who stuck to sticks taught their kids on sticks. Many did not. In the 3 generation even fewer and fewer sticks. I did teach on of my 3 grandchildren to drive stick. But he chose to drive an auto. Really a matter of sticks going from 95% percent in the 50's to maybe 5%.

I almost always had one manual in the family. I taught my wife to drive my brand new '69 Camaro. So she cn still drive stick (very well actually). The last stick I bought was a 2016 Chevy Spark. Sold a $12,000 Vehicle for $6500 bc it was stick.

Obviously both my vehicles are automatic. And automatics are faster and get better mileage.

Its like..why don't people have washing machines that have a "wringer" to get the water oot of the cloathes. They are dead and so is the manual.

Nah, driving is different than a washing machine. For many of us it’s as much about the enjoyment as it is about the destination. It’s more like...why do people fly fish when they can just use a big net?

I learned how to drive manual as a teen, not out of necessity or family familiarity, but because of passion and interest. Just like mechanical watches and record players, young drivers will eventually feel like manuals are cool again. I’m fine with an auto mini-van or whatever, but I’d never buy an auto fun car, unless I had some kind of physical limitation.

There is definitely a greater sense of control and user involvement with a 3 pedal manual you just don't get with a DCT or auto. Also, a responsibility, that if you want to move you have to work for it.

And a reminder that you're often one miss downshift away from blowing up your engine lol.

I'll never own a proper track car and if things go well also never own an automatic except possibly electric in the distant future.

I'll DD in traffic because the good outweighs the bad any day.

I do have a motorcycle, and can't imagine a DCT rather than a manual. Odd, isn't it?

I have an E46CI M supercharged manual, an X5M F15 8 speed auto and a Porsche 997 turbo cabriolet stage 2 tuned.
There is no doubt that a manual is more involving, but the modern auto boxes are superb, THE BMW 8 speed with flick across sport mode and paddles are so much faster away from the lights and so very controllable at a touch of the finger tips,
Great in crawling traffic. For the driver just a big grade up from a stick and clutch change
