Tempted…and torn…
A perfect for me specification 2020 840i Grand Coupe has appeared….exactly what I would order in terms of Dravit and extended white merino, all the toys (and I really mean ‘all the toys’), every option bar tow bar, panoramic sunroof,14000 miles. Only thing I would change if I were ordering new is I would have the carbon interior trim opposed to piano black, but the piano black would have been my second choice…had it in my 328GT and loved it so no issue there! Can’t believe how close this car is to what I would order.
Question is should stump up another £20k ish to px for my 2019 330i M Sport 14000 miles mint condition with essentially the same specification in terms of toys? I know I would get close to what I paid for the 330 2 1/2 years ago, the dealer is continually asking me if I want to sell it back due to shortage of good used stock.Obviously the 840 is at a different level in terms of quality of seats and interior (particularly in the back) …..but what is putting me off is when I sit in the 840i looking forward I see pretty much the same as my 330…same instruments, same binnacle, same switches (some very minor differences to the a/c controls), same steering wheel, same gear selector and switchgear around it other than the Clarity stuff which is nice. It doesn’t feel like a massive upgrade from the driver’s seat. Unbelievably the 840 has a smaller boot than the 330 according to the sales data, not sure how they have managed that in a car that is a foot longer! I am aware that the six cylinder is a peach if a motor but in the real world the four cylinder in the 330 is plenty for me, actually think it is a terrific motor in it’s won right. So the increased performance, which in terms of 0-60 is marginal, isn’t really an issue for me. I know I am the only person that can answer the question…….it’s ripping me apart Last edited by Seaford; 05-02-2022 at 04:35 AM.. |

Hi Andy - I made a very similar choice back in August last year, albeit from a G20 320i which I'd bought brand new in September 2020, and it was a well kitted out car. I managed to do the swap before cars like the 8 series had really been affected in terms of inflated values, so I had a good bit of equity in the 3 to use as a deposit for the 840i. Again managed to find a peach of a spec car - Mineral White metallic, M-sport Pro pack, Premium Pack, Technology Pack (only thing I'd have chosen would have been the black / red leather rather than just plain black, but when buying used you've got to make some compromises and that was a small one for me).
I completely agree with you in terms of when you sit and look around, it doesn't feel like the £87k ish list price my car would have been when new, but when you consider what you can get them for it makes more sense. My car was the Sales Directors car, and it had done 1,200 miles when I bought it 9 months old so it was basically brand spanking new for a considerable discount! When you scratch deeper than face value though, it does feel like a cut above the 3 in terms of fit and finish, and the driving position is just perfect - you can get really low and "in" the car (if that's your thing). The B58 is the deal breaker - what a peach of an engine. Even though the B48 in 330i form has plenty of go, it feels nowhere near as effortless, smooth and aural as the 6 pot lump, and the performance is absolutely plenty for the road. On steady runs I can get mid-40's MPG without too much effort, which is crazy given the performance on tap. Anyway, the short version is just do it!! Life's too short and all that |

Follow your heart! In my experience, once the new car itch comes its hard to tamp down.
But you cant go wrong. There is something about the long 4 door "coupe" shape that creates desire in the absence of any practical tangible reasoning. I suspect bmw knows this based on their pricing regime for this car. When i traded my 650 gran coupe for a m5, i loved the m5 but i really missed the shape/silhouette of that 650 gc. My vote is go for it! |

Oh well, that’s not going to happen……..greedy greedy dealer offered me £7000 less for my 330i than they would have it on the forecourt for after px. So there is say £6k profit there and say £5k on the 840, and I think I am being generous with those numbers…….I don’t mind them making money but that is just plain greedy and it’s not coming out of my pocket. They suggested I should value my 330 using webuyanycar.com. I suggested that was fine as long as we valued the 840 on the same basis…they didn’t seem too keen on that.

@Andybird try contacting some local independent dealers to buy your car - they'll work to smaller margins than a BMW main dealer will.
Great comeback though |

A significantly increased offer was made for my trade in in Friday…too little, too late. How to hack off potential buyers, especially a repeat customer…
In the short term I suppose as when looking forward from the driving position in my 330 it looks very similar to the 840 I’ll just have to pretend I have an 840…..for the time being. Wonder if it is easy to change the 330 on the boot to 840? Or maybe even 850? |

Playing the long game worked out….picking up the 840 on Wednesday.
The dealer finally relented and was looking for sympathy as he says they will be lucky to break even. My heart bleeds….. Yeah, I know, this is the third thread I have mentioned that I am picking up my 840 on Wednesday…. |

Dravit Grey v Sapphire Black….the Dravit doesn’t look like it needs washing every time it rains unlike the black 330 that I chopped in….never EVER getting a black car again……although they do look stunning straight after a wash and wax….for about five minutes

I only noticed today that if you look closely’BMW Individual’ is etched onto one of the spokes. Which is nice. |
