One is a 4 seat rear engine car and the other a 2 seat mid engine car. Its like saying people only buy an M3 because they cant afford an M5. A lot of people prefer a smaller, more nimble car vs a larger GT car.
Meh, the 911 is hardly a 4 seat car. I've driven them at length and even my 4yo daughter can't really fit back there. I'll give you mid engine vs rear engine, but I doubt more than 1-2% of the 718 buyers chose it over the 911 because of that. As for size, they are nearly identical.

991: 176"L x 71"W x 51"H
718: 173"L x 71"W x 50"H

Not really a disparaging difference and certainly a smaller difference than the M3 vs M5 comment.
Ok whatever you say man. I don't know why it's so hard to believe that people choose a car because it's what suits their needs best and not simply because they can't afford the more expensive model. Even using your example and saying the 911 and cayman are roughly the same size, it would again be akin to saying someone who buys a 330i only does so because they can't afford the 340i or M3. It's just not true.

WRT the 911/718 debate, I could afford a 911 but also wanted something I felt comfortable daily driving. I’m not at the point where driving a $100k+ car is something I’d want road rash on or have to pay for all the upkeep. I enjoy driving all three of my cars to work even though neither of them are top of range (stingray, 135is, boxster).

I think of a 911 as more of a luxury GT and the 718 as more of a purist type back to basics sports car.

For some people it's not about "I buy this because I can afford it". I buy cars because they have something I like about them. I want to walk out of a building, see a sea of cars in the parking lot, find mine and have that "Oh, yeah, that's what I'm talking about" feeling. That thrill of driving something I like means more to me than "my car is more expensive than yours".

And I can fit my 4 year old in a 997, a 991 would be good to probably 10 years old. I'm 6'2" and can fit in the back of a 991 for short trips.

As long as you have no legs, it works great.

Highly doubtful you can sit straight up. You have to lean to the side and into the other seat.

I didn't say it's preferable to an Uber, but it's still possible to just dive into a friend's for a quick trip.

And for my 5'3" wife, it's not really a big issue, provided she's wearing pants.
