My Pilot 4s were fitted at an independent tire shop. They said the 4s is the market successor to the super sports, but not yet approved by BMW, as BMW wants to mark up the price of super sports. Either the 4s or the super sport should be fine.

So BMW contacted me today and have basically now said that the Michelin tyres are not BMW approved and as such have offered to replace them to approved tyres at no cost to me, check the alignment and suspension components, the Michelin's have done 300 miles !

I am seeking clarification on whether or not this involves switching them back to Bridgestone which I am objecting to on safety grounds. They also have asked me to give them updates on tread depth every 1200 miles, completely missing the point regarding the uneven wear particularly on the inside shoulders which is almost impossible to see without the car being on a lift; particularly for the rears. Also with lockdown here in the UK, I have only done 1200 miles in the last 12 months !

I am still not happy, there is no explanation for this problem. I have pointed them at this thread as proof other cars are experiencing similar issues.

Having said all of that, at least I am getting some positive acknowledgement that there is something not quite right - even though they are very careful not to admit to any responsibility. So I will continue the dialogue and see where we get to.

What a gentleman you are - thank you, I'll keep you posted, pretty sure I have got the star because on Black Circles I specifically chose the BMW fitment. The other irony of course is my local dealer fitted the first one but I didn't want them to fit the remaining three because it was something like a £150 premium which just seemed ridiculous to me.

Interesting that Bridgestones aren't on that email from BMW.

Does anybody know what the actual difference is with say the Potenzas which are useless and the Michelin Pilot where its been said it fixed the problem.?

I have read that the Potenza's suffer from really rigid sidewalls which makes them pretty unforgiving on uneven roads. That also might explain the excessive shoulder wear, and could even explain the grinding at low speed.

Checked the Michelins I had fitted, and they have got the stars on. So I would say it's fine.

Michelin global website quotes Pilot super sport as the only tyre for the 850

840’s can use the sport 3 tyres

I have the pilot super sports on my 850. They are noticeably better particularly on edge wear

So further to my last post, pointing BMW UK at this thread, they have acknowledged my concerns and are talking to their technical people now. Not sure what that means, but it shows how determined you have to be....... Will keep you all posted. Credit to BMW now, I think they understand the issue... I hope.

Thanks for your diligence.
I can't remember what tyres I have on my summer set-up since I switched to winters almost immediately after buying the car. I am pretty sure they will be the Potenzas thought.

It will be interesting to do some measurements on the winter tyres after they come off and see how mcuh degradation there is, if any.

I am due for new summer tyres when they get swapped back on, so will definitely look to go for the Michelins based on the feedback here.

I have been told today that I will get a full response on Monday, but the arrogant tone seems to have disappeared. I am not sure (again) what that means, but now..... the customer service is what I would expect and that means a lot.

My last car before my current M850 GC was an F10 M5 which came with super sports on it .. they lasted well and I replaced them with pilot 4s's and couldnt fault them , a great tyre with immense grip, they had dual compound make up, so the outer side was a softer compund IIRC. I'm interested to see where this goes as I can see uneven wear on the 850's Bridgestones already and its only done 2500 miles in UK

Well..... it looks like on Wednesday, I will no longer be an 8 Series owner. BMW UK have finally been fully understanding of my safety concerns, and since they cannot confirm whether there is a fault here or not, have agreed to accept the car back. It is bitter-sweet if I am honest, I do love the car, one of the nicest I have owned, but I wasn't willing to have this unresolved issue continuing for my ownership. I have to say that BMW customer service has gone back to the level I am familiar with and they have acknowledged my loyalty to the brand with the several cars I have owned over the years which I really appreciated. So it is the end of the story for me I am afraid (as long as this offer concludes properly) but I am sure this thread and other owners experiences has helped get this situation to some sort of conclusion if not a resolution, so thanks guys.

Time to go shopping....... and get a bit more use out of my wife's X5.

OK well that's good if its solved your problem R, well done for persistence. I know you can hand back cars at a certain point if you have a loan on the car so I wonder if they took it back due to good customer service or because under your loan you can give keys back early and walk away as you had it 18 months. Only wondered because if its due to concerns over the car its a big statement from BMW.

I took my car to CTS in Derby today for laser tracking on putting the car on the ramp the printout showed the tracking out, which would explain the abnormal tyre wear the tracking I believe incorrectly set at the factory.Unfortunatly they could not set it because the car needs specialist equipment due to the lane change equipment which they didn't have.
How many other owners have had there cars tracked?

To respond to both posts above, had the alignment independently checked by a very trusted company, and everything was absolutely fine. Not sure that helps you, maybe you have a genuine alignment issue.......

@t4tommy So.... you are correct you can 'reject' a car that is on finance, but the finance company have to accept your application to reject it and that has to be on the grounds (typically) of safety or 'fit for purpose'. I also agree that you can hand the car back mid-agreement as long as you have repaid 50% or greater of the loaned amount and in fact have done just that in the past with 2 previous cars. This is a bit different though.... I have had no dealings with the finance company, purely just BMW UK. In fact I am not sure how all of this will be financially resolved, but I am assured the outcome will be favourable.

Crucially BMW have not acknowledged or identified a problem with car. I have noticed though, most recent new 8 Series in the marketplace have factory fit Michelin's........
