Sorry I wasn't clear, they are completely emotional cars. I meant that Porsche would disagree that:

"it's silly to think that people should be following some algorithm to determine a mathematically-optimum decision, like a computer or something."

I say this because Porsche's entire model lineup is a carefully planned and calculated near linear algorithm between price and horsepower and they sell sell sell! So yes, people do follow a very basic algorithm when making emotional purchases!

However this is a completely different manufacturer. My argument was just that it happens and not silly at all.

It has also more features than a Ferrari that cost 3 times as much. So?

- material quality
- power
- handling
- efficiency
- prestige/image
- technology
- doors

- lighting
- colors
- weight

You are assuming that everyone's idea is the same "mix" of the above that you do. All you're really confirming is that this doesn't appear to be the car for people like and people who think like you, and that's 100% fair - you just need to understand the limitations of that statement.
Thats why I said this is a niche market. I didnt assume everyone was like me, I assumed the majority would not buy it since they will either not be able to afford it or not be able to justify or see the value in it.

You're comparing a hand built Italian super car to an 8 series? they are not only in different leagues, but from different planets.

If people complained about the performance of the F80's for the price and compared them to cars (Porsche, for example) twice the price (literally), imagine when the fully loaded M8 is released for over $160k USD BEFORE Tax.

Point being, car looks great and sounds great in theory, but as someone stated earlier, it will be an emotional buy and they will be as abundant as a brand new S65.

The guys on the Porsche forums know their stuff & the Turbo S is notorious for being one of the worst depreciating 911 models. After 3-4 years you could probably easily score one for 40-45% depreciation.

Do some reading on Rennlist if you think I'm crazy. Those guys know how to score deals from the stealerships
Thanks, I'll have to look again. Was going to see if they drop again when the 992 comes out . . . but the last I looked, I couldn't touch anything newer than 5 years old for under 6 figures.

No I’m not comparing, I’m being sarcastic. What you’re doing by comparing X5M to 8 series is very similar to what I did sarcastically.

No it's not very similar. I compared two cars built by the same manufacturer in the same manner for similar purposes.

You compared a hand built Italian super car made entirely from aluminum and carbon fiber.
When the 8 series starts to weigh half of what it does now and starts implementing carbon fiber and aluminum throughout it's entire frame and body then your sarcasm will hold.

You think the more expensive, uglier Merc is a great proposition, but you think the less expensive BMW will flop due to price?

You should be grateful, that means we can pick them up in a year for a huge discount when everyone trades them in for the m8

It's okay to just accept that you're not the intended demographic for this car.

+1. I think the M8 convertible would be a wonderful replacement for my SL63 & 640 but I'm not making the mistake of buying these kind of cars new again. The depreciation is ghastly to say the least. Hope there's lots of red CPO M8's rather than the usual white/black/grey/silver etc.

My friend in the UK the M850i will not find its feet, the US is a totally different market, as an indication just look at how many 640i have been sold compared to a 640d, the 650i sales can be counted on one hand. The general view is that this is not a 100k + car.

I think the marker fixes itself. The reason why they depreciate so much is price correctly. A higher MSRP than the market can bare. I'll pick an M850 CPO in the $90s easily.

These are emotional cars, it's silly to think that people should be following some algorithm to determine a mathematically-optimum decision, like a computer or something.
Yeah the only emotion this vehicle will induce is sadness/depression once the realization hits that you spent 120k on a base car with less features than a fully loaded X5M but costs 30% more.
This car just like the 7 series will be sold with $15,000 off in rebates and incentive money. But to your point the other cars are great but they don't look like this one and that's what makes the difference.
