Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of Audi (and Porsche, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc.) guys around BimmerPost - it’s great to have opinions from drivers of other makes of vehicles. And after all, some people own multiple cars from differing brands, or simply decide to switch. It’s just that I’ve never seen anyone driving another make that chooses a nick to pay homage not just to BMW, but to a very specific BMW aftersales part. Kinda different, you know?

Also, you love posting pics of M3s and M4s, which is great. But how come no pics of the RS3? I’ve seen lots of guys post pictures of their non-BMWs in this forum - that’s part of the reason the Automotive General forum exists.

As others have said, most of the top F1 drivers have been racing since they're 3 or 4 years old (usually in carts).

Start small and work your way up. There are VERY few drivers in the world that make it to F1.

What makes you think you're one of the elite few?

Cause he's 21 and at that age your ego tells you that you can be "elite" anything. Till the training starts and then the dose of reality that tells you that you are not nearly as bad ass as your ego thinks you are.

I have been karting since i was 15, so i am familiar with karting racing

Average driving age around the world is 16/17. So you have one extra year of driving experience on a average driver. Those guys all start around ages 6-8. This means the day you climbed into your first kart those guys already had like 8 or 9 years of experience on you.

Great. So you have something to base it on.

How many championships have you won at this level?
If you look at Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Aryton Senna - they were all carting champions.

If you've won championships, I would imagine that some type of Formula series cars would be your next step. Something that actually has a working aero package.
When I got my SCCA license, we raced in identically prepped F2000 cars. I was on poll and won both of those races. That was the only time I competed in identically prepped cars.
Now I race endurance races in the American Endurance Racing Series (AER), so everyone runs different cars.

I believe all you need to do is click your heels together 3 times while saying "I want to be a race car driver". That should do it.

I guess now, kids are noticed in their early teens for car/kart control and speed and marketability. F3 is where you need to be a standout and everybody is usually very fast at that level. To get the best equipment there are many different avenues; father being ex-F1 driver, backing by a F1 team principle or management company.
The top manufacturers and top managers are constantly scouting for talent, and offering test drives.

It used to be you could go to a racing school in England or France and kart on the side and with talent be an F1 driver, but now its much more competitive and if your simply being funded with less then stellar record then it's extremely pricy and in most cases short lived.

Also, many young people get sport ending injuries attempting to get into F1 - it's actually crazier then you probably think. There are a lot of ex-drivers and ex F1 drivers that have lasting signs of head trauma due to accidents during their careers.

If you have to ask how to become F1 driver you have already failed and the train is long gone. Its just the truth. Just like asking how to become Usain Bolt.

Think about for a minute how few F1 drivers there are, and how many are already trying to become one? You're more likely to win the lottery..

Take for example Lance Stroll, "pay" driver for Williams, 18 years old:

He started with karting, winning races and championships North America
- Won the Italian Formula 4 Championship at 2014 (~ age 16)
- Won the Toyota Racing Series in 2015 (~17)
- Won the F3 European Champtionship in 2016 (~18).
